auto culto
got this fella from a flock of around 40 that have been persistently damaging crops on my permission. I'd been waiting for the season to start for ages wanting a crack at these as the farmer had been moaning and ****** me they all cleared off to elsewhere from the 1st . Anyway i was out having a stroll and the whole flock landed in the next field to me , they couldn't have been in a better position so i duly air mailed the biggest one have a .223 40gr round at 153 yards :o. It was also my first kill with the rifle so i was quite chuffed. Not exactly sporting but when chances are handed on a plate you cant say no sometimes. Poacher
Is there not quite a bit of meat damage using a .223 on a birdie

auto culto
not much damage really, it was just 2 small holes (in and out) as the birds weak structure didn't deform the bullet. I placed the shot just behind the breast as to cause the least amount of meat damage as possible. Tell you what though, I'd truly forgot how much plucking those ******* take but for 85p (for the ammo) its a cheap meal as its weighed in at 9 1/4 pounds after I'd dressed it :o

That's how i interpreted it on the basc site anyway. I really hope your not going to say otherwise, as I've been getting pestered for while now by the farmer so all I've been doing is moving them on by putting a round through the shotgun to scare them off
rarms
Canadas are on the general license now AFAIK and thus can be shot anytime.
MC
Legally they can be shot anytime, Morally they should be left until the 1st Sept. Well done that man for waiting.
jayward
taken from BASC The duck and geese species that can be shot are: Gadwall Goldeneye Pintail Pochard Shoveler Wigeon Tufted Duck Mallard Teal Canada Greylag Pink-footed White-fronted goose (in England and Wales only) BASC has had confirmation from Defra that the Sections 2 and 13 of the Protection of Birds Act 1954 which prohibits the shooting of geese on Sundays in certain counties of England (see below) has been superseded by the General Licence. (Cornwall, Devon, Doncaster, Great Yarmouth, Isle of Ely, Leeds County Borough, Norfolk, Pembroke, Somerset, North and West ridings of Yorkshire). The prohibition under the Protection of Birds Act 1954 refer to a season, this season did not include Sundays, Sundays then became seasonally prohibited, not banned. The general licence removes the seasonality of the shooting and in any case takes precedent as a special licence. That is to say: Canada geese can be shot, on Sundays, anywhere in England, so long as they are taken under the criteria set out in the licence. rarms
Martin, I think the Farmer whos crops are being damaged may feel differently! jayward, Not sure what the intention of that post is, but have a look at the current Defra Licence and you will see that Canada's can be shot year round when classed as pests. MC
Maybe so, but in my experience and certainly around my area canada geese only seem to go on stubble so technically they are not damaging crops. I agree that geese doing damage to crops in vast numbers should be culled the same as pigeon and rabbits. The biggest culprit around me will be the Brent Goose later in the year and they are protected. They are not enough Canada's around me to shoot on the saltings which is why I said what I said. auto culto
that will teach me to read the whole page and not just glance at the dates I,d better not tell the farmer as these ******* had been working their way outwards and an area of flattened wheat. Ah well all the crops are in now so i,ll just bag one a week or so for me and the family as i cant see the point in hitting them hard at the mo as there's nothing for them to damage
