Jonnyni
This substance is no longer available to buy from chemists as it has a cancerous element in it. It was eccellent for dying prawns purple and no other dye comes close. Would anyone else know of a good a substitute for a purple dye. Maybe our 'Doc' could shed some light on where I could get some Gentian Violet/Crystal Violet.
BTMS
JONNYNI, Try potasium permagnate. Doctors used it!!!!!!!! (Think thats how you spell it maybe Doc knows)
Jonnyni
Slight correction on your spelling 'potassium permanganate' Tried that two nights ago but the solution turns brown after about two minutes and turns the prawns a golden brown colour not purple. That colour might work also but im still after a replacment for Gentian Violet as I am running out.
BTMS
JohnnyNI, Is it a dark purple or light like the old Palma Violet sweets colour? Brian
Jonnyni
Gentian Violet is a dark purple nearly like royal purple. Dylon do a dye that is very close but it 'dosn't do exactly like it says on the tin' if ya catch my drift.
red_stag88
Dont get the Potassisum on your fingers, its fairly evil.

Fisherman Mike
V difficult to get hold of Gentian Violet now mate as you know. I have used neat food colouring mix of red and blue (and other colours) and steeped the prawns in it for a few days. it helps if you let them dry out a little in a low oven for a while. Never had much success with Dylon. FM
JONO
I'd personally recommend changing from bait to fly and tying on a "Silk Cut Shrimp", invented by Andy Wren - very popular now and come in all the purple hues you could want. You could contact him from these forums (under ACW): http://flyforums.proboards20.com/ Regards Jon
