Bandsaw refurbishment

Recommended Posts

I purchased back in March a second hand Record BK3 bandsaw and was perfectly happy with the machine for cutting my walking stick handles.

Last weekend I received a call from my brother, asking if I wanted a large bandsaw as he wanted space in his shed, as the saw wasn’t used.

I asked how much he wanted for the machine, and was told it was free, on condition I make him a walking stick .

I went over his house to view it and it had lots of surface rust on the housing and he switched it on and cut a piece of wood no problem even with a blunt blade, but was a bit noisy.

I jumped at the offer, and the saw was delivered last weekend by him.

On initial inspection the guide bearings was seized and I ordered new replacements and I picked up 3 new blades and on opening the door of the machine found it rammed solid with damp sawdust and I don’t think it was emptied since he purchased it and had the same blade !

I spent a few hours removing the surface rust and removed the sawdust and fitted a new blade and it cuts 6.5” oak pieces no problem, but still a bit noisy.

Today I totally stripped it to find the problem, and found a few seized bearings, and ordered new replacements which will arrive Wednesday, and also found the drive coupling attached to the motor missing a grub screw and moving on the keyway causing the drive belt to scuff the casing of the machine.

The threads for the grub screw was totally stripped and I re drilled and tapped for a 6mm grub screw and fitted onto the motor, and is now secure.

Checked the drive belt and it doesn’t need replacing, and the band wheel tyres will be replaced in a week or two as they are showing signs of perishing on the edges.

I know it’s a bit of work, but once done it will be a cracking machine, and it will be looked after by me, unlike my brother.

Yes, ditchman I’m very pleased with the machine and it has the aluminium tilting table and rip fence.

I found Bedford Saw & Tool have some spares available for this machine and will order 2 new blade wheel tyres .

Ive done a bit of research on the machine and it’s a rebranded Electra Beckum BAS315 machine.

Yes, TIGHTCHOKE, for a bit of my time and effort, and minimal cash to repair, the machine will work as new again.

My brother and I look alike, but we’re definitely 2 different people and have a total different outlook.

He was using the machine, knowing it a few issues and would have continued using it until it finally stopped working.

Me on the other hand, if something breaks, you repair it and carry on.

Received the new bearings this morning and just rebuilt the machine.

Waiting for 2 rubber tyres to arrive for the aluminium blade wheels but that’s only a 5 minute job to do.

Very pleased with the end result, and it works quietly and no annoying squeaks.

It will last for many more years now and didn’t cost a fortune to repair.

When my brother sees the machine running, I suppose he’ll want the machine back.

I better make his stick, before he has second thoughts and changes his mind !

Excellent work. Similar to mine which I think is 'Ferm?'

word of warning, I gave mine a spray with something ( may have been belt dressing for additional grip or maybe some lube) anyway it totally destroyed the drive belt which was a sort of silicone rubber reinforced composite. Destroyed it within 10 seconds, totally knackered! Bought new belt, spare belt and never sprayed again

Just received the 2 bandsaw tyres to complete the refurbishment.

Had excellent service from Bedford Saw &Tool.

Well TIGHTCHOKE you must know my brother very well as he is the youngest sibling of 3, and has whinged and moaned all his life.

I put it down to being a spoilt child.

I can’t see why he wouldn’t like the stick, as it’s a carved deer head and have to put a holly shank on it.

I didn’t carve the head but purchased it as a job lot and worked out around £12 each.

The saw is running like a new one now, and I’m very pleased.
