I had some doubts more than 60 years ago, when I first saw an advertisement in a Youngs of Misterton catalogue dating from the 1930s. Gent dressed like Mr Toad, dangling a sawn-off shotgun (well, maybe a Churchill 25”) with muzzles not far off the ground. I could never quite make up my mind whether that nose-in-the-air stance meant he was looking for the pheasants, or sneering at the peasants. I understood how this device might avoid Sagging Pockets, but was always intrigued to know it provided Freedom from Irritation. Gravity will cause the cartridges to position themselves base upwards so making them orientated the right way for when you reach for a reload. A shake is a good start, but I go further, because just a shake does not leave all in a full pocket the right way up. I shake first and then fiddle in my pocket (oo-er Missus!) until virtually all are stacked the correct way. This helps for the first pocketful, but if the peg gets really busy (dream on!) the hasty fistful from the bag to the pocket can be anyroadup. Cue panic! My end goal is to compete locally in some hpr comps in which you go out for 20mins with the dog and need to shoot 2 items of game with 4 cartridges which the dog has pointed. As I'm at a early stage in my shooting life would I be best to persevere right handed with my patch or go back to the beginning and get a left handed gun.
