I’ve dug out my dads old meteor so the grand children can do a bit of supervised plinking in the summer holidays. The rifle is good condition but needs a good overhaul. Serial number starts with TD so a mk2 I believe. I’ve stripped it, the main spring is tired and the buffer and piston washer appear to be leather, hard and dry. Piston is a key way type. Question, what solvent is best for dissolving old grease, carb, break cleaner? What type of grease to lubrlcate once clean. I intend to use a new standard spring or am I wasting a chance to beef it up a little. Any advice greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. 👍👍

There's quite a few gun cleaning products available that are designed to dissolve grease. You could also clean metal parts by dipping them into thinners. You could also remove grease by applying hot air ( not too hot though)
