elgreco
We are booked in for a months holiday in Canada in September. Calgary, jasper, Banff and surrounding areas then Vancouver and up to Toronto. It now looks like a fair chunk of it has gone up in flames, so sad.
B686
It is a shame, seems a regular occurrence now though. Someone I know is going there in November (jasper) to train as a snowboard instructor. Canada is a place I would love to see one day soon. Flown over it before couldn’t believe how much we must have flown over without seeing any signs of civilisation.
Dave at kelton
We were there for 6 weeks last year and it’s heart breaking to see what has happened to Jasper. When we were there forest fires were raging further north but it affected so much of the country the Rockies were largely smog covered. It wasn’t until we got down to Vancouver Island we couldn’t smell wood smoke.
amateur
We did The Rocky Mountaineer experience, 5 years ago, Calgary, Banff, then on the train from Jasper to Vancouver. We saw small patches of forest that had burned the previous winter, but no actual fires. Jasper was a nice town. Minky
It's so sad. Just imagine everything that is your life stuff just ashes. Family photos, documents in fact all of it. Some years ago I used to communicate with a bloke who lived on the goldcrest. One time his community had a fire and he was lucky and the fire went past his house. He said that the problem was the result of houses being built in woodland and that undergrowth wasn't cleared away. So when there was a fire it was tinder to power the fire along.
