welsh1
General Jackson has died aged 80. For those of you who have no idea who he was, he is the man to thank for evading a world war. He was ordered bythe American General Wesley Clark his direct superior in the NATO chain of command to intercept Russian forces when they entered the Kosovo conflict without NATO's agreement. He said in a speech "Gents-if i do as i am told, we will likely be at war with Russia by this evening. I am not going to start the third world war for you." To keep the peace he took a bottle of whiskey to the russian general at the airport and provided british troops as protection to the russians.General Mike had a reputation of being able to drink most under the table. R.I.P.

R.I.P. I saw and listened to him on many tv interviews, sounded like a no nonsense chap and well informed. I bet he will be missed in the military circles as I know these older guys are still asked for advice on fundamental military issues. Thank you and RIP

Flashman
I had dinner with him in 2010, after a Paddy Ashdown book signing. We sat six round the table. He spoke about starting in intelligence - he was a member of the Travellers Club - but I mainly remember him talking about his son. Another para, Mark became an artist following a parachute accident. There were other VIPs in the dining room that evening, but Jackson stole the limelight without either trying or wishing - I don’t think Ashdown was impressed. His son mark was the one in charge of the British troops he assigned to protect the russians.
