Xmas eve roost shoot

Had a little go last night to give you chaps something to read! No wind, pigeons VERY high and not under any pressure to land so they could choose their spot, usually nowhere near me or my buddy (yes, another friend!). It's a 20-acre wood. They could come from any direction, except the way you were looking!

Forced to shoot at them way above the already tall trees.  At least at that height they don't move so fast, a bit like a Boeing 737 at 37000 feet moves slowly across the sky. Switched to the top barrel with full choke. (my usual gun is a double trigger o/u Beretta ejector but for roosting I use a single trigger non-ejector so I don't have to search for the empties in the bushes after dark) Used Pigeon Extreme, 34gms, No 5 shot.

Good sport, missed a few but hit 8,it seemed that they took about 3 seconds to hit the deck after getting folded up, crops exploded and bits of rape were spread far and wide.

Great sport, farmer happy.

Cheers and happy Xmas,

All the breast,

KR

Well done, the point of roost shooting, (for me at least) is that is hard work and takes a little planning to get a few WP's down.

A TRAP gun was usually what got used for the Roost Shooting.

Great shame BASC don't seem to publicise the usual February Saturday shoots like they used to.

Morning Dave and a Merry Christmas to you and your family .

I think part of the lack of publicity by B A S C when it comes to roost shooting is that even after the temporary loss of all round Pigeon shooting by C P and co is that even in this day and age there are people who think they are breaking the law by shooting Pigeons that are not doing crop damage , when you are expected to use non lethal methods on crops before you can revert to use more lethal with a shotgun then that don't really make a lot of sense where you can roost shoot or flight line shooting with still being above the law , this come under the heading of Prevention , the G L will soon come up for review so it will be worth keeping an eye on it to see if they cut out any of the ( loopholes ) MM

kitchrat   Nice report once again , you scared a few and at least 8 wont be enjoying there Christmas dinner .😛

Yes, round here we get a few chaps out on the 1st night, if it's not a massacre, next week it's the 6 Nations for them. It's a team game, not everyone is the centre forward scoring all the goals!

BASC have deteriorated, in my opinion, to a bunch of free-loaders and virtue signallers. Great to have an expenses-paid trip shooting Ibex in Spain or something, then telling me that steel shot is just as good as lead, because they broke a few skeet clays with steel!  Try a high Canada with steel, possible but not likely! I have moved to the NGO.

OK JKD, I'm moaning again, don't bother to tell me!

I used to be invited to a Game Shoot in Lincolnshire by a Mate.

This often lead to being invited to roost shoot every Saturday in February and luckily there were enough of us across the area to keep them moving.

BUT, one afternoon we arrived and were sent out to look for some good shooting. In those days I would shoot six and then gather them up and go back to my stand and shoot another six and so on.

When we gathered as it had become dark two old boys were rather surprised that I was carrying quite a few WP's back to the cars. I asked them how many they had shot and they sheepishly replied "none". I asked shy and their answer was "because they were too high up".

Hence as I stated earlier a good bit of choke can help and give confidence. Oh and of course RED Cartridges.  :good:

Get someone else to sort them out for you and ONLY take RED ones......... :cool1:

I have some 50gm No 3 shot from my goose hunting in Scotland. I'm told they are red (might be green, or brown) will they do? I was using near transparent Extreme Pigeon 34 gm No 5.

Great news, I've found some red ones!! However, I do think 63gms No 1 shot may be a bit of overkill. (Get the little joke!!??), so I may stick with the Pigeon Extreme for the high birds. Cheers anyway!
