Van has been making a whining noise lately when changing gear and picking up speed .Took it to a local garage ,turns out the turbo is knackered. Can anybody tell me if there should be any other issues if it's a failed turbo.Doesn,t seem to have lost power ,no black smoke coming out of exhaust.Ain,t got a clue about engines. If it is a failed turbo would it cause other issues with the engine.

W hinting turbo means the bearings or oil journels inside have failed or are failing. Similar to a noisy wheel bearing.

A noisy turbo can pose no threat to further engine damage, but at the same time, could cause catastrophic engine failure.

IF it was to let go in a bad way, the turbine shaft and the impellers in the turbo could break apart and find themselves being sucked into the intake of the engine, and into the cylinders. Meaning one very broken engine.

But, on the other hand, I have seen plenty of noisy turbos go on for thousands of miles…

need a bit more info please!

Is it using oil ?

how many miles has it done ?

how old is it ?

is it the 2.2 or the 2.0 ?

whiring transit’s are a thing but I would be getting a second opinion on it’s the turbo ?

a search on transit custom forum don’t seem to have lots of turbos going unlike wet belts on 2.0 .

Ford are not on their own here with wet belts, Vauxhall, Mercedes, Peugeot, Citroen and many others use wet timing belts.  Wet belts have been around for 17 years and the lesson learnt in this time has reduced the service interval and shortened the life span. The main issue remaining is using "Compatible" oils and incorrect servicing, which could also be the cause for premature Turbo failure.

Totally agree I can’t let my 2.2  do 24k between services!

My concern with wet belts is that on the fords there is no easy inspection route .

Would I have a 2.0 with a wet belt yes if i could afford one and when i could buy one the garage would not warranty the belt or subsequent damage past the forcort not even the top notch warranty they we’re offering.

so 30k for a second hand van and the possibility of it having a 5k repair was the point I thanked the salesman for him time and left my hard earned in the bank !
