Fil Posted Tuesday at 13:30 Report Share Posted Tuesday at 13:30 Hi everyone, For those interested I just had an email from Steve Boor at Kynamco offering me to get in the queue for some more black powder cartridges that they are loading. I have bought from them before and they are great fun on the last day of the season which is our shoots clear up day with my hammer gun. Sadly Steve has said this years batch will be the last ever load of black powder cartridges they will be doing. I haven't asked why yet but just wanted to let you all know if you are a customer of theirs and haven't heard yet or you shoot black powder and might want some. They will courier them to your nearest RFD. They are not cheap at £27.60 a box of 25 but I still consider that to be good value for money for hand loaded cartridges. I shoot on average 7 -10 cartridges on our clear up day. That's 7-10 giggles every time I pull the trigger. The 100 I get lasts me a few years so worth the money I think. They are 12 bore 1oz loads of No.6. Unless of course you already load your own which is something I will consider in the future.
Pukka Bundook Posted Tuesday at 14:16 Report Share Posted Tuesday at 14:16 Fil, If you run out of bought cartridges, black powder is very easy and forgiving to load. It can be done well with any of the old rolled turnover machines you see at arms fairs and such. All the best, Rich.

I stand to be corrected but I think Kynamco are the last to load and sell black powder cartridges in the UK. I understand that black powder is quite forgiving. I have a couple of revolvers. A 3rd model Dragoon and a second gen Walker. I don't bother measuring the load I just fill the cylinder and press a ball down on it. Great fun. A local gun shop to me has started selling traditional black powder so it's a no brainer. Shame thing is, I had a 12g loading press given to me when I worked at H&H. Incidentally, it was used to load the whale marker tags for the Royal Research Ship Discovery back in the day. It sat collecting dust in the store room so I set it up at home with all good intentions but never used it so I got rid of it. Now isn't hind sight a wonderful thing? W W Greener has loads for all calibres and also for the classic 1 1/8 ounce load. You may find that as black powder is bulkier that you need a roll turnover tool. Modern ones that have a cup to grip the base of the case are IMHO better than older ones with two or three "tines". One warning is that I would advise ONLY using paper cases as plastic cases will melt! 1 hour ago, Feltwad said: For a 12 the load is 2.3/4 drams to 1.1/8 oz of 5 for pheasants smaller for partridge or pigeon hide shooting . Enfield, I have found a reloading or two is normally OK with plastic cases, but they do look a bit wilted after that! For paper, if the roll is getting a bit soft, l have dipped the case mouth a second or two in melted beeswax to firm it up. ATB, R.
Feltwad Posted Tuesday at 17:38 Report Share Posted Tuesday at 17:38 Game bore used to load both 12 and 16 bore black powder cartridges but the last person that I remember who loaded for most Birmingham and London gun makers was my old pal Alex Kerr from Greiff Scotland who died a few years ago ,old Sottish forum members may remember him If you have an old catalogue of Thomas Bland there is all the loads for loading of the old powders Feltwad

I do. From Crieff. He also used to load excellent smokeless powder paper cased 1 ounce of #6 with a roll turnover. Nice cartridges they were. I used some when I went up to Dunira to shoot some thirty five years ago.
DUNKS Posted yesterday at 10:10 Report Share Posted yesterday at 10:10 I load quite a lot of 12g black powder in new primed plastic cases and with a 75/80 grain charge and a roll over crimp. I have never had a case melt!

One year on a shoot I belonged to before it folded we had a guy called Dave who only shot Gamebore Supergame. So one shoot day was his birthday and we slipped a couple of Gamebore black powder cartridges in his cartridge bag but honestly thought he'd notice. They were both green but you could obviously tell the difference. On our premier drive Dave was in the hot seat I was next gun along. The birds flew over. Bang bang went Dave. Another bang and then a booom on report. He looked at us startled, saw us trying not to laugh and simply said "you baskets." or words to that affect. We laughed and wished him Happy Birthday and then more birds came over and Boom went Dave again He unwittingly loaded and fired the second black powder we slipped into his Winchester 101. His pride and joy. I had to break my gun and dropped to my knees from crying with laughter. I couldn't see the birds for tears and clouds of smoke. He took it well did Dave and muttered something about having to properly clean the gun now.
