Hi.

Really need some advice about the new springer pup. He is driving the Wife and Kids mental as he keeps Biting them and their clothes.

He does not seem to do it to me and no matter what we try he will not stop.

The Wife really gets it but after he stops chewing on her, she is the one that he wants to curl up to. When he starts she really lets him know it is not on but it don't seem to put him of, he just has another go.

As i say he seems to leave me along.

We have been trying all the normal things and was wondering if anyone else has had a prob with their pup and if there is any other ideas to stop him. He is 10 weeks old.

Cheers :good:

Welcome to the World of Pups

I think they all do this but what i did to stop mine from biting the kids feet, well mainly the Mrs :good: was to buy a small nylon bone for her to chew on. ( The Pup not the Mrs)

Everytime she goes for their feet etc just give her the bone....

good luck i remember how sharp those little teeths can be

Agree with nttf, think like a dog!

Another dog would maul it to keep it in check and thats the best way to teach it quick, give it a bite back on the snout or the ear,not to hard but enough to make it yelp.It will quickly learn that if it bites it gets bitten back and will stop.

Thanks for the advice, the wife has been having a nibble on him as suggested and although its only been a short while there has been a definite improvement. He really don't like being bitten back and is beginning to now not chomp on the wife and kids as much.

Very good tip, mind you downside is the wife has been coughing up fir balls all night.

Cheers all

As stated above, some good advice there.

There is a couple of different camps - "direct action" and "distraction" the latter being something like a party blower. (Beware of loud sharp noises though, or you may end up with a gun shy dog.)

My border terrier loved to maul our hands. I used an old ferret technique, thrusting my knuckle into it's jaws and holding them open till it squealed, then a bit longer, using the word "gentle."

Even now, if it gets a bit rough in play, he word gentle brings instant licking and "dog apologising".

Pups chew. It gets better when the adult teeth arrive, but let them have things they can chew, and teach them not to be too rough, they are just learning who is in charge. (Just in case you aren't sure, it's YOU!)

Hope this helps
