Bore snake & T8 Moderator?

I have read lots of different opinions on moderator cleaning, the knowlegable fella in the gun shop said NOT to spray any cleaners/solvents into the mod directly, he advised me too store the mod on the gun but loosen it by 2 - 3 revolutions, wipe over with an oily rag and dab around the the exit hole (oo er mrs  !) and take it off every few weeks to clean the thread and barrel which is sleeved over.

Does this sound like pukker advice?, can you pull a bore snake through the rifle and mod (i would think this would just drag **** into the mod?), i know removing the mod should not alter zero, can anyone confirm this as a fact?.

On the plus side, with the moderator on,and using hornady 58g through my 243, my groups today have gone from a 50p to a 5p coin at 100yrds,and the weather was cack!, so can anyone give me some opinions on maintaing the mod!

Cheers, Mark

No.

If you leave your mod on after shooting you may find you will have a very rusty barrel as a result.

The zero remains the exact same when taken off and put back on if its tightened up to the same tightness not mad tight though just as tight as you can go just using your fingertips and the rear bush should be a tight fit too,I give mine a blast of wd40 in the rear of the mod every time it gets damp it prevents rust and does not do any harm to the mod just the first shot tends to be a bit smokey :lol:

The threads should be greased with graphite paste or copper grease

With nitro-cellulose powders that are in use today, if you leave any residue in your moderator and it gets damp, it will produce nitric acid!

Cleaning it seems a good option to me, the bloke in the gunshop just might want to sell you another

A mate of mine makes his own mods out of titanium because that will put up with the acid attack. They are however very, very expensive to make.

On a still day when you chamber the next round, as you work the bolt forward your rifle blows a neat little smoke ring! :good:

It's the material that's expensive ................I await in anticipation for the first polymer or non metallic version to hit the market :good:

And very hard too! It's a beggar to thread, he has had to get some special taps and dies from Germany. It is worth it though, as the one on his Mauser 7 x 57 weighs just over 300grams.
