robbsy
I have been offered a 3 yr old chocolate lab which is apparently bad on the lead ie pulling not walking to heel. Dont have any idea if it has had any training at all and would like your views on if it is possible to train a dog of this age which may have been left to his own devices or whether it is to late and best to avoid. Guest The Outlaw
It depends on what you want to train it to do. Heel work is easy if you are patient and have a choke chain suitable for the dog. You need to know how to use it and when. After you have gained its confidence and trust you could elaborate on the training. Tony

Possibly later train to retrieve depending on on how well the intial training goes

robbsy
So is it right then that chocolate ones are stupid and difficult to train or just a myth
new to the flock
Are you looking at the dog as a pet or gun dog. If it is a gundog, then i would be checking it to see if it is gun shy or noise sensitive first. There is nothing you can not teach a 3 year old dog to do inside the realms of retrieveing, etc. Give a good indication of where you want to go with the dog, and as much information about the dog as you can. casts_by_fly
myth. There are dumb black, yellow, and chocolate labs. I've seen chocolates that were smart as anything. Now a chocolate Chessie, that's a different story. They aren't dumb, just tougher to train. Hard headed is a good way to put it.

NTTF P.S. Before anyone goes off the handle....I love Chessies, I have owned 3 over the years, and if I was going to be cold water waterfowling, and i had no kids I would have one again. The reason I say no kids as they have a tendancy to become very over protective of children to the point of not letting parents to the child if it is hurt or sick. All in all they are a wonderful dogwho's training is no harder than a lab just runs in different lines. NTTF
