Cooper Firearms

I'm going to put in an order for a Cooper Firearms rifle, specifically a Phoenix in 6.5x55mm in left-hand (http://www.cooperfirearms.com/phoenix.html). This version is not yet listed on the website, but it is available (although with the usual 6-month wait for the rifle to be built and imported by Brian Fox).

Having done a search of PW, a few people like Dunganick and JohnGalway have mentioned Cooper in previous threads. Coopers are pretty rare in the UK, and so far the only Cooper I have used is the Varminter model in 6mmBR. It was a work of engineering artistry, and a joy to shoot.

Does anyone on here own a Cooper rifle, or have any opinions and/or advice?

PM this helpful fella. There maybe another Cooper owner on here but I can't remember for sure. Craigy has a lovely one by all accounts. I'd love to own one, the only thing that keeps putting me off is that they are single shot.

Good things are worth waiting for.

Damnit, now I have to go to their site and drool for a while, where'd I leave that keyboard cover... :P

I've already tracked down Craig's review and photos of his Cooper. I've exchanged a few emails with the chap selling his (right-hand) Cooper on GT. The single-shot issue did make me hesitate, but I'm more than happy to wait for the right shot and place it well.

Thanks for the pointer, John, I'll PM Stirky.

I had a Model 21 for a number of years in 223 and they are indeed top quality rifles. I have just swapped it for a Sako Varmint in 22-250 for no other reason that I wanted a 22-250 but didn't want the wait. Mine is for sale at Bond and Bywater in Preston for very reasonable money and shoots like a demon. Don't hesitate if you don't mind the wait you will not be dissapointed!!

if i had the money from my howa again i would without doubt be buying a cooper, not only would it have come quicker than my howa did, it would shoot better and would look just as good.

I have only handled one once, like you say, hens teeth are easier to find than coopers. The importer is fox, ive had good and bad experiances with him, but he is helpful, just somewhat tied by what happens the other side of the puddle. Take the 6 month wait with a pinch of salt. Mine was a 3 month wait, turned into a 9 month wait when i got bored and got the rifle elsewhere.

The single shot issue was the only sticking point for me, other than that it is in my mind the perfect rifle. There was a good review on 6mmbr if i recall, and a few lads on BBS use then.

my brother inlaw has a cooper in 22lr with a heavy barrel, and yes a very nice rifle, i cant say anything bad about them however in your case just consider any warranty issues hate to see you spend a small fortune and end up with a lemmon although unlikley it could happen, just remember even Mercadies pumps out a lemmon from time to time

Hi Baldrick, sorry for the late reply, ive just sent you a PM, not realising that most of your questions have already been answerd.

Yes without doubt coopers shoot and look great, worth the wait. My friend shoots a 22,250AI phoenix stock, they are very nice rifles, good cartridge choice, the 6.5x55 will be superb,

Keep us posted, a word of warning about cooper rifles, (dont buy one, it will lead to cooperitis, a very addictive and un-controlable obsession)

Unless I want to go through the hassle of importing the rifle myself under a DTI import licence, then yes, sadly I have to buy it via Brian Fox. It's a pity, as I would happily buy it in US$ and jump on a plane and pick it up when it was ready. Sadly it's nowhere near that simple.

I was going to buy a Mauser M-03 Extreme before I got to use a Cooper, and the Mauser is £1,530 for the rifle and £250 for the Mauser scope mount. I like the Mauser, but the Cooper is something really special.

Crikey, you dredged this up from a while ago.

Cooper will not sell direct to anyone. FWIW, Cooper Arms is in a spot of bother. It has just been bought out by Wilson, a much larger firm, which probably has a different ethos from the famously friendly Cooper Arms. Dan Cooper is no longer leading the company.

Harnser, don't say that, you'll just provoke all the people that dismiss single-shot rifles simply because they need that second shot... A Cooper or Ruger No. 1 is obviously not the ideal tool for clearing up a litter of fox cubs, but they are very useful in some scenarios.

One of those Tommy Coopers would indeed be very nice to own and drool over .
