Olympic Shooting Venue

It would appear that work is still going on behind the scenes for the 2012 shooting venue. here is the text of a message that I sent to British Shooting

I suspect you have been asked this many times, but I do not understand why

the 2012 Olympic shooting is taking place at a very expensive temporary

venue in Woolwich when a lasting legacy of the Olympics would be a state of

the art facility to be enjoyed by many others after the games have come and

gone. Why is shooting being done down in this manner?

Here is the reply that I received very speedily

This is the decision of LOCOG, British Shooting has been trying for the last

18 months to overturn this decision, so far without success and the matter

is still being actively discussed with LOCOG and other interested parties.

We share your frustration and are doing everything possible to achieve a

successful outcome and legacy for our sport.

I won't hold my breath though.

I'm trying to remember where I read something about moving the Olympic venue to Bisley. From what I can remember, it would have been cheaper by a long way, bigger, more complete and would have been able to stay for a long time thanks to it being a permenant home for British shooting.

If I was a member of the delivery company, I would have chosen bisley... But then again, I have common sense and I am not political, or [possibly] giving in to interests from urban renewal companies.

Despite (or maybe because of) living in the South East, I have never darkened the doors at Bisley. My brother shot there many a time in competitions when he was an air cadet in his youth. I just think it is ludicrous to spend all that money on a temporary facility when we could have something lasting for future generations to enjoy. Unfortunately as shooters we probably won't get that. We were even told by the staff down at Hythe Ranges that as shooters we were on the fringes of society. Livid didn't even begin to cover it :)

Bisley already has 90% of what is required, but I am sure I read 'they' said it was too far from London?

Apart from the clay shooting facility the rest of the place could do with a serious cash injection that is for sure.

Someone needs to buy the olympic committee an Atlas, the official line on Bisley is that it is too far from London. But It wasn't too far from Manchester when the Commonwealth Games were held there.

I have heard a rumour that the olympic comittee and government were told that unless pistol shooting was made legal again in the UK, they could find an alternative venue.

Hey, if they aren't doing it at the Olympic village why not bring some of the UK Olympics to the rest of the country - we might even see some of OUR taxpayers money back in revenue!!! :)

No doubt it'll be kept for the S.E though...just the same as the Channel Tunnel (so much for the Northern/Scottish extension)!!

Remember when Manchester hosted the Commonwealth Games. You would have thought that the North West would have hosted the shooting, and as is being discussed here, benefited from some lasting legacy; but it was not to be. The shooting events were hosted at Bisley, which must have benefited in some way.

So, if Bisley was not too far from Manchester, how can it be too far from London?

I believe that the construction costs for shooting at Woolwich are £18 Million, followed by £8 Million to demolish and reinstate at the end. What an absolute waste of money, the officials involved in this decision should be disgraced.
