For Foxing etc in lamplight something with a good objective lens and medium magnification and a eye shield but for daylight use on 2-300yd rabbits a 6-20 would be better.

Ammo? I always prefer 55grn SP for the 223. You may loose a little trajectory but good accuracy and a higher holdover still lifts rabbits and hares off the ground at 300+yds.

Don't misunderstand me - most shooting is done at 80-220yds with a zero of 1" high at 100yds and no adjustment for range when shooting but the above choice is still great for the odd longer range target with a little holdover.

I have the same gun and it shoots 50grn American Eagles best, Frank had the same gun too and would agree with that.

Homeloading, I used 52grn A Max's and they were very accurate indeed.

I would stick a Hungarian S&B 8x56 on it, but if you ask 20 different people about scopes, or calibres for that matter, you will get 20 different answers . . .

I have a S&B 8x56 on my 6.5x55, they're lovely scopes. They're pretty robust, and the optics quality is very good.

As for ammo, try several and see how it goes. I'd stick to 50ish grains or below for trajectory benefits. Trying to tell you a bullet it will like is pretty impossible, but I'd suggest trying the cheapest ones first in case it likes them. If it doesn't, you haven't wasted so much money on ammo that's no good to you :good:

i baught a 223 527 varmint about 3 months ago and it is a very well put together rifle, the scope i use is a hawke 2.5-10x56 ir. when i baught it i wondered if the ir was a bit of a gimik but 10 days ago i was foxing in a gale force wind one night and i shot a fox at 150yds which was sitting in a furrow all i could see was its head so turned on the ir and put the dot on the target and the fox never moved any more. so an ir may be worth a thaught. on the subject of bullets i have been trying lots of different makes and weights and i am leaning towards horniday v max 40gn they are very fast and flat, i zero at 150yds and have the same aim point at 200 or 50 but having said all that all the other ones i tried performed more or less the same but the vmax just had the edge with accurcy , the gun seems to like any bullet, hope this helps
