has anybody out there got any tips on patterdale terriers,

as my mate has just got one :good:

Tips on what exactly??

The breed is a very hardy, fearless rough coated terrier, ideal for ratting, bushing...............or ground work.

A good solid dog is worth its weight in gold if it makes the grade

The best dog we ever had - bloody tough!

The only thing I'd advise your mate is not to let it any where near holes in the ground. The hours I spent sat waiting next to a hole whilst I could hear him scratching away below reach into the hundreds, (they don't give tongue, so locating them can be a pain in the ****).

He was as loyall as anything, swam like a fish and was brilliant with the kids.

He had an amazing ability to find golf balls, tennis balls and hedgehogs and prior to the ban dealt with a number foxes with no fuss whatsoever, (although that's not we had him for).

In fact I'm in the market for an all black one if anybody knows of a pup, (preferably a dog).

When (not if) the dog starts to think it's the boss come down on it hard or you will have no end of problems, keep it working for you and they're great little dogs. As a terrier should be, an extra helping of teeth and guts and a reduced sense of fear.

as a pet get something else, they are born to work and unless very careful your mates pet will resemble a tasmanian devil taking on all comers. Personally I would never have one as I've seen too many that just want to fight everything to me they are a working dog not a pet.

Missed the OP's second post saying the dog is to be a pet, I agree with al4x - working homes only for these dogs.
