Mutley
I just wanted to share my moment of glory with you all, 6 months ago I brought my wife a Golden Retriever pup (Bitch) we had not long lost the farther in-law to cancer and life in general was a bit flat. We already had a bitch (1001 breed) and at 13 years I thought that with every thing the last thing my wife would need is an empty house if any thing should happen to the dog (life has a nasty habit of chucking every thing at you all at once)….. Any way I brings the pup home as a surprise for the wife knowing how she was brought up with a Retriever and how much she loved the dog. Needless to say she was thrilled and bless the old bitch took to her as well. As my wife is involved with horses she took the 2 dogs with her every day and where ever she went, it had been agreed that the new pup now named Missy could be trained for shooting if she has the desire or she would just stay as a pet no problem…. So I get myself a little cap gun and fire off a few rounds whilst Missy is playing and slowly over a couple of weeks the noise doesn’t phase her, then I introduced her to the SG from a distance gradually getting her closer, as for game when I had been pigeon shooting I would bring home a couple of small pigeons and throw them round the back garden and Missy would bring them no bother and the same with small rabbits, fur and feather sorted…… At six and half months she comes rough shooting with me and when I have shot birds mainly pheasants she is straight on them and with encouragement will bring them to me even flappers! She cant quite get them in her mouth but holds them by the head and they drag at the side of her but hey she’ll get bigger, last week she brought me her first rabbit even jumped a small log with it. My mane concern had been water though, Missy would paddle all day long, shove her face right under run in the stuff but always careful never to be out of her depth. I tried throwing things further and further out hoping she would go in but alas I feared I would have a dog with a 5ft. long neck whilst she just reached for every thing. But after our usual walk round the fields which didn’t produce any thing I had an hour spare so I took Missy down to the brook knowing full well that after all the rain last night it would be well up and it was! As usual in Missy goes for her paddle so I find a stick and throws it in…..SPLASH Missy launches her self in and instead of panicking and making her way back to the bank, as I would have expected she proceeds to SWIM and retrieve the stick, not once but a dozen times and each time I’m like a dad watching his kid take it’s first step, giving her praise and telling her how good she is, and to think she is only seven and a half months old now….Chuffed doesn’t come close!! Sorry to bore you with this story I just had to tell some one!

fishybarney
Its always great when your dog takes its first swim, my lab run off the end of a platform swim around a lake when he was only 3 months old. Was hilarious because his legs kept running even though he wasn't on tera firma anymore. He just bobbed up and started swimming around, have to say my heart was in my mouth when it happened but was great to see him swim, now the only problem is trying to keep him out of the stuff.
