ME
I am stilll trawling fleabay / autotrader for a practical and cheap 3rd car (4x4) for shooting etc. I have been looking at the Nissan Terrano. They do a 3 door and a 5 door and a 2.7 TDI version. If I shopped around I could get a low miler, 1 or 2 owner for around £2k-£3k. They arent as gay looking as a Jimny but they aren't as rugged as a Shogun. It seems like a happy compromise. OK, so they arent a Landy and they arent a Disco but they are Jap (so reliable) and my needs dont amount to much more than manouvering off wet grass mostly. Some of the shoots we do can be 120 miles on the road and 20 foot on grass so on road comfort is really more important. I have put other posts on for suggestions of 4x4s so I am not looking for alternatives, just an opinion on this car.
al4x
my dad had one and it seemed fine, pretty reliable but not much good off road. If you've that much on road mileage are you sure about a proper 4x4 I'd hate to drive mine that far when I could take something far quicker! Blackbart
Had one in a different guise,it was an import and called a "mistral" a terrano to the rest of us but it did have the benifits that come with an import ie..no rust and all the toys on it,stainless bullbar, side steps, wind deflectors, poncy little mirror on the passenger side front wing, ladders up back door and best of all it had only done 52000km which is about 30000 mile i think.I was very happy with it right up untill i stuffed it into the back of a farmers 4x4 because he stopped and i was buisy watching where a big flock of pigeons were going  One thing i did notice was the brakes werent up to the job of stopping you in a hurry!.Mine was the seven seater version and it was very good off road, and quite good on it but you are aware that you are driving a truck and not a car with regards to cornering etc. So if you can get one for a decent price lv in my opinion go for it. p.s. since i have been a crash test dummy in one i can also vouch for the safety of one aswell, the isuzu i hit was wrote off and mine was classed uneconomical repair but was put back on road 6 weeks later

I have a C Class Merc for work but it got stuck on the grass at one of Martin Cavies shoots the other week and I haven't lived it down !! The other option is that I sell the Merc and get an Audi All Road - best of all worlds.

Axeman1984
i work for the environment agency on the rivers around east anglia and most of the places we go each day are off road, we have several nissan terranos and they stand up well to the day to day beatings they get, as you can guess we dont pay for em so they get driven pretty hard and there a good truck, good off road and not much goes wrong with them, all round top pice of kit

I bought two Nissan terrano commercial jeeps back in 2000 for security patrol work in two quarry's in Leicester did the job OK and travelled loads of road miles in reasonable comfort. sadly one of my Muppet's triad to see if it would float, he had to swim back, and I lost one on an insurance claim. I think from what you are saying this will suffice.

Harnser
Had one from new in 2002 ,ran it for 18 months and then bought a disco .It never missed a beat and apart from niggling trim problems inside and out was a very good reliable car . Pulled better than a disco ,was faster than adisco ,better mpg than a disco ,just as good off road as a disco withthe limited slip diff ,but not as much room inside as a disco .I found the terrano an excellent all round car ,suitable for the supermarket run as well as using on the farm .I would definately buy another one ,the only improvement would be the 3.0 litre engine .
