Markio
Friend at work is Warrington based and he's looking to get into clay shooting. He's done the batchelor party type clay shoot a couple of times but wants to have another go in a more serious environment. I suggested checking out the CPSA web site for grounds and instructors. He's found two in his immediate area, Catton Hall and Manchester Clay Shooting Club. He did find one in Liverpool but he's a bit nervous about being in the vicinity of an armed scouser. Anyone local have an opinion they'd like to share on these clubs? Or any other suggestions? Thanks for any responses!
Yellow Bear
Don't know about the ground in Liverpool but I am with him on his comments Catton is a nice ground but only open for "practice" on a wednesday I beleive (web site) Like a number of others here I a a regular at Manchester (normally referred to as Worsley. It's freindly, easy to ger to from Warrington (unless your cxar is particularly low slung). open for general use wednesdays, saturdays, sundays, with adequate catering facilities. Shoots sporting A6 at Bolton - been the once, shoots DTL and , I think, Skeet - not my bag. Others on t'other side of Manchester atr Glossop - The Boar and The Grouse. Hope this helps D
Mr Potter
There is a clay club that is in Warrington, (Lymm actually which is the posh part of Warrington). It's called The Star Gun Club and is located under the Thelwall viaduct on the M6!!!!. They shoot every other Sunday morning, a 50 bird sporting, and seems a very friendly sort of place. I try and shoot 100 bird comps these days (I don't know why, Stevie Wonder beats me most weeks) so it's a while since I've been there but you can contact the owner, Ged, on 01925 756379 or 07979 232261. Hope this helps Mr Potter

Markio
And what are the instructors like at these grounds?
Mr Potter
With ref. to The Star at Lymm - you would have to ring the owner, Ged and ask. There is also Rixton CPC now re-named Astley Gun Club which is just off the East Lancs road. They shoot a 30 bird sporting fortnightly (alternate Sunday's to the Star) http://www.rixtoncpc.co.uk/index.htm The website advertises a package for new shooters. Yellow Bear
And what are the instructors like at these grounds? Depends who you get at Worsley, but there are several all average to good for the requirements of a new shot - they also do a deal which I think is 5 off 50 bird lessons and a year's membership for £250 - check the website for details. Chard
My Mrs has lessons with Ian Corrigan at Worsley, he is a great instructor. I agree, Ian is a top bloke. I had an "advanced" lesson with him once, very enjoyable and interesting, he got me thinking about aspects that I wouldn't have considered. He also made me want to start shooting from the gun down position, something that I've not pursued very vigorously, but I do start to employ it on targets that take a long time coming, to stop me "tracking" them for long distances and falling asleep :good: He also gave me some very useful tips on useful ways to "practice", rather than just continually doing a round of 100 sporting and calling it practice. He encouraged me to get proficient in shooting targets in a variety of different positions - early in the flight, in the "normal" kill position and late in the flight. Useful stuff, if faced with simultaneous pairs. Edited March 17, 2008 by Chard
