Cranfield
I am going to have a partial, or complete, knee replacement operation this year. Old sports injuries, 3 cartilage operations and now some arthiritis have all combined to make this necessary. I have some choice of where and when , as I will have to have it done privately. The NHS don,t do partial replacements anymore and the waiting list for full replacemnts is too long. I am advised that the cost for either operation, is about the same. A couple of questions for you all. Do you know anyone who has had either of these operations ? If so,what was there recovery period ? Did they go abroad for the operation ? If so, where ? Deako
What amazing timing, Cranfield! My mum has had this op about ten weeks ago. She had it done privately through BUPA. I'm sad to say that she has suffered terrible pain from the day after the op, until the present date. After about 5 weeks she had to have a further op to 'stretch the ligaments' as they had gone very tight. She seems much better to me, but still says the pain is worse than the arthritus she had before the op. She really needs the other knee doing but is now too afraid to do so. That said, another lady had a knee done on the same day and was walking perfectly well after three weeks. I suppose some people are more resilient than others. The cost so far, for the op and physio, is in excess of £13,000.
Cranfield
Thanks Deako, the costs sound about right, unfortunately I,m not in BUPA. The operation is available at specialist orthopaedic hospitals in France and Spain, at almost half that cost. I,m sorry to hear that your mother is still having problems, Ihope she improves soon. The "ligament thing" sounds unpleasant, I have been told about it, but was also told that its not very common.
Malc
A farmer friend of mine had a the full replacement on the NHS. He said it was the Bees knees,(excuse pun), and wished the other knee was as good. His recovery took several months, but, as a working farmer doing heavy work daily, that's only to be expected. NGhost
Mother-in-law had one done about 10-11 years ago. She was walking after 3 weeks and has never looked back.
