reedbradshaw
Im thinking of applying for my Shot gun cert but having a few problems....heres the lowdown! im 20 y.o. living with both my parents in a semi detached house which is owned by my parents. i work as a quantity surveyor and im classed as a "professional" ( does this have any baring on a SGC issued or not? i do not know!? The house has a external garage which is block & brick built which is located in my garden, next to my house ( but not attached to the house ) After talking with a chap at work, he informs me he knows somebody who has got their cabinet fitted in the garage....is this possible ? another bloke at work tells me he thinks this is risky! and advises me to do what he has done. fix it in the loft on to one of the gable walls. Im up for both of these ideas, my Mum isnt too keen of having the cabinet in the house for some unexplained reason. But she doesnt mind me having it in the loft fixed to the gable wall ! I am the only shooter in the house and have permission on roughly 170 acres of land. the farmer said he will sign anything what will need signing. what advice would you give .....except move out! ferretman
hi you do not need permision to get a sgc only a fac. i would put it in the loft mate.as long as you have a good reason to want a sgc you will be fine mate.
Markio
Is the loft easily accessible? I wonder if your FEO might have reservations about a cabinet located somewhere with poor/limited access. Does you mum realise that the cabinet is there for safetys sake and having in the house (not loft or garage) is safer for everyone. EDIT: My second paragraph is a poor choice of words. What i mean is the cabinets are built for safety, secure to deny access by anyone other than the key holder. The gun in a cabinet unloaded is a useless piece of wood and metal. Storing it in the loft makes no difference at all. Edited April 7, 2008 by Markio

bob300w
It's unlikely that you will get the OK to have your cabinet in a detached garage, but different areas have different rulings. The only person that can tell you the answer to your question is your FAO. Give him or your HQ a ring.
Poacher
get the cabinet moved indoors for ease of access, reduce moisture problems, safety etc etc. Tell mum she can put her jewellery etc in there as a compromise. reedbradshaw
Many thanks for all yuor adive i will give the FAO a ring. i have the application form but i cant for the life of me see how much it is to apply, can anyone give some light on this ? the loft hatch is located in my bedroom and is easily accesible via a ladder!! will the FAO look down on this ? also, do i have to buy the cabinet first and fit it to show the FAO? this seems like a waste of money if the FAO turns down my application! ill be having words with my mam when i get in, im not sure she fully understands lol would i be able to fit the cabinet to my grandads house ( he lives next door! ) and have a license in my name ? sorry if these questions seem daft. i just havnt got a clue at the moment! Poacher
Tell mum she can put her jewellery etc in there as a compromise. Bish bash bosh Job done Not sure if this will work long-term. Spare space in a cabinet tends to get mysteriously filled with new shotguns , leaving little room for jewellery! of course it won't work its only to get the cabinet in place (i.e in the house) jobs done. Sorry mum cabinets too small to fit your stuff in, oh dear
Ferret Master
Hi, The main issue with having a cabinent in the loft is one of accesibility. Sometimes the FLO may not think that someone who lives with other people will want to pull their loft ladder down at 2am when they come in from a nights lamping as it would disturb the other people who are sleeping. As a result the gun may be left out overnight unattended thus defeating the object of having a cabinet in the first place. FM
reedbradshaw
that was one of my main concerns, thing is my room is quite small.. the only place i can possible think of is the place there my wardobe is. would i be able to put the cabinet in my wardrobe and bolt it through the ply at the back of the wardbrode in to the external block wall ? this would then keep the cabinet hidden and out of sight,,,what a winner! please comment! Ferret Master
You could always remove part of the back section of the wardrobe then bolt it to the wall. As someone trying to break into the cabinet could otherwise break away the ply quite easily then have room with which to try and jemmy the cabinet off the wall which they wouldn't be able to do so easily if it was bolted directily to the wall. njc110381
If you could cut a section of panel out of the back of your wardrobe and bolt it to a block wall that's about as good as it's going to get in the FEOs eyes. The cabinet is secure, easy for you to access to put your guns away, and out of view of anyone visiting the house. A garage isn't much good as you will get condensation in your cabinet, which isn't good. The attic will be a pain in the ***, try to avoid it if possible. If you can talk your mum into letting you have it in your room then that would be perfect. Have you ever had depression? Any criminal convictions in the last 5 years? Drink driving, drug related problems or alcohol misuse? Epilepsy? No need to say on here, but if not I'd put a weeks wages on it that you will get the certificate without any problems. They have to have a reason to turn you down. I'd fit the cabinet first unless any of the above applies to you, that way the FEO doesn't need to come back to check it. Make sure you use good solid fixings. You need to be able to pull on it as hard as you can and not shift it, so either rawl bolts or epoxy resin studs are best
