Birdboy
Whilst we are on the topic, i have my FEO coming to meet me on Sunday, and i have asked for a .22 .17HMR and verbally a .223 which we can discuss on Sunday he said. Is there much difference between a .223 and a .222 as mentioned in the above reply ? Cheers Gaz
njc110381
All you can do is try, if you don't ask you wont have any chance of getting it will you. The .17hmr is very popular with the FEO in my area and they prefer it to the .22lr. I guess it just depends where you are. The .223 may be an issue, but it's worth asking. They may let you have it. As for the .222 or .223 debate, there's not much in it. The .223 has a little more power, but the main thing to consider is it also has widely available ammo. The .222 seems to be getting less popular now. As far as the FEO is concerned, a .222/.223 is the same

njc110381
Thanks NJC Do you know the approx cost of .223 ammo comapred to a .22 ? Thanks Gaz It's a lot more expensive! I pay £4 for 50 .22lr, and I pay £14 for 20 .223. You can get .223 for £8/20 if you buy the cheap stuff, but there's no way of telling if your gun will like it. Just for reference, my HMR ammo costs £11/50 Edited April 10, 2008 by njc110381
Birdboy
Cheers NJC Cost is much higher. In terms of range on a .223, how would this compare to the 100yds average of a .22 ? Cheers Gaz
Paul223
well that depends on your opinion of 'range', my .223 will group to within the killing zone on a fox with out adjusting the sights or holding off right out to about 235 yards
silver_fox
When I applied for my fac 6 months ago I asked for a .17hmr, .22lr & a .223. I was told by my feo that the .223 was no problem but I couldn't have both .17 & .22 because they were considered to be the same tool for the job, i.e rabbit control, so I chose to go for the .22lr. As he left he did mention that if my rabbits were getting out of range after 6 months he would probably grant a variation for the .17hmr. It's now 6 months on and I have just sent in my variation for the .17hmr for longer range bunnies. Lets see how it goes.
ferretman
silver fox how much land did you have cleared?thanks
njc110381
I got my 6.5x55 on 170 acres of flat ground. You don't have to have a vast area to get a larger calibre. As long as you can show that the bullet will stay in the floor when it's passed through your target you should be fine. You may need a high seat for smaller areas or flat ground, but they're not hard to put up
