ABOLT
I have a 17hmr on my f.a.c for fox and vermin and have used it on foxes if i dont have me centre fire rifle with me but i only do headshots upto 100-110 yards no more, i dont go for the boiler room at all with 17hmr but you will find other people agree and disagree on this subject. only you will know what your capabilty is. chunk
For an opportune shot while out rabbiting the HMR has the potential within its limitations. Same as .22lr. Close range. Its not a dedicated fox gun and never will be. Use 20gn xtp`s for penetration and keep your shots sub 100yds and it will drop a fox no problem. henry d
hiAny one got any expieriance shooting foxes with a 17 hmr. Thinking of getting one for closer shots 80 - 100 yrds. Any advice welcome I am making presumptions at this, you are wanting to use one for "closer shots" would indicate that you have a higher powered rifle ie. a centre fire ? If so you don`t need the HMR for that reason, so why not save your dosh ?
Glynn
Cheer for the info guys. Henry D have got a centre fire but was looking at a 17 hmr for bunnies at long ranges but also have a good friend who only has 22 acres have got permission for use on this land up to 17 hmr and he has a real problem with foxes have seen more than could count on his land and he has lovely helpful neibours which feed them. Onhis land he has 1000 chickens and 75 sheep/lambs he has also lost all of his ducks to them. Would not like to use .223 on his land as i dont think it would be overly safe as residentual around. I can call or bait a fox easily up to 80 to 100 yrds away so with the 17 hmr not being as powerful and not much chance of ricochets but being powerful enough think it might be a good choice. Do you guys agree.
