A very enjoyable day

On a whim ( actually the wife wanted to use the computer all this afternoon :yp: ) I decided to have a look round my local farms. Most of it is rape and wheat stubble that has been well gleaned by the pigeons. But I set out with an optimistic attitude.

It was a brilliant summers afternoon and the wind was blowing nicely.

After about 3/4 hr recon I decided there was a flightline, next to a freshly harvested wheat field. As I usually do, I put the rotor out, with a few plastic decoys, and sat back to watch the world go by. Well that's all I did for 50 mins. Not a single pigeon came along the " flightline " I thought I had seen. But I did notice that they were using the far hedgerow, so I upped stumps and moved across the field.

After setting the rotor out again, and some deeks, I sat back and watched a kestrel feeding on a dead rabbit. Plus I saw a pair of dragonflies go by ( actually they appeared to be joined...do they mate like that ?) Then a pigeon swooped down, towards my decoys. It was classic. It was obviously commited to the deeks and came in like a good 'un. Then it veered off.

This happened again shortly afterwards. It was then I remembered I hadn't fully covered the rotor arms in camo tape. When I stood in front of the rotor the arms were flashing like a bloody lighthouse. No wonder the pigeons were spooked.

So in the rotor came, and then the pigeons started coming in. I knew it wasn't going to be a red letter day but it was one of those days it was just a pleasure to be out there, enjoying the odd sporting shot. After the first one down I set out my floater ( yes I believe in them as well Cranfield  )

The final total was 13 woodpigeons for 22 shots. I was well happy.

( Now, was it Eugene who gave that excellent pigeon recipe ?)

I'm going to have to get some me thinks.

Sniper, sometimes its just great watching whats around you on them quite days, as long as you get a few to keep you happy it makes it worth while.

I'm a nightmare for missing pigeons sometimes because I'm shooting away with the camera at anything from a plant to a bird in the sky.

Over here in the Emerald Isle, there has been a sudden increase in Buzzards, as a young lad I never saw onw and only in last 3 yrs have they appeared.

During a quite time in my hide, nicely camoflaged, I got 'buzzed' by one swooping twoards my hide, I had to wave my hat at it incase it was coming closer! Fabulous, seem to have wingspand of around 3ft.

I've seen a pheasant charge out of a ditch to 'run' a cat that was out hunting. Cat didn't budge and pheasant ran staright back in. :yp:

For the grief we sometimes get, how many non shooters get to see this side of nature?
