dustyfox
As long as you got an interest in shooting you should be able to get it, join a shooting organisation like CPSA or BASC and go to clays shoots.
garyb
You need a "good reason" to possess a shotgun Using it for Clay pigeon shooting is a valid good reason

InGen
oo i want to know to if its anything like a FAC then its straight forward. Edited April 16, 2008 by InGen
dustyfox
Do you mean when applying for your certificate to the time you get your certificate in your hand? If so the FAO will come and visit you and see wheather you are an ok person check where you are going to put the gun cabinet why you want a shotgun, and he is there for you if you want to ask any questions. Some people dont put there cabinet in before the officer comes round but it means he will visit at a later date when you have installed it. bob300w
how long does this normaly take ? and do they ever refuse a certificat Yes, certificates are refused, for various reasons. Time from application to receipt depends on the work-load of the HQ involved, it can be anything from 3 days to 3 months.
dustyfox
How long a piece of string? It depends how busy they are some people on here get theres within two weeks but others been waiting a whole year, but usually 12 weeks. They can refuse if they see if you are not fit to hold a certificate mainly violent crimes, depression, as long as your not a nutter they will give you it, but you sound like a good person being in the military, where they teach you gun safety and all that. If you got a real interest in shooting you should be fine.

yorkshirelad
yeah but it helps and its another thing that says you got an interest in shooting and if they refuse you they will give you help. how will the basc help mate BASC can offer advice and support, they know (or should know) the law inside out etc. Being a member will also give you insurance, although I've got to admit I've never looked into exactly what this covers. As others have said, with an SGC (as long as you've got a reason, eg clay pigeon shooting) there shouldn't be a problem. You do need a person to countersign you application though. Don't think this has to be any particular type of person, but someone "in good standing" (like an old commanding officer for example) might be a good person to ask. As has been said, if you're coming out of the army you must know about firearms safety and so on. Other than that, and as long as you co-operate with your local police, it's not normally difficult. Good luck with it. course i know about safty but taht post is helpful mate many thanks(and i will keep boring you all with the progress)
peter-peter
yeah but it helps and its another thing that says you got an interest in shooting and if they refuse you they will give you help. your counter signer can be your doc /old CO,/ bank manager. an engineer, school teacher, your boss anyone of social standing who has known you for a minimum of 2 years. not a relative not a policeman not a gun dealer. if you have no crime record, no drink driving offences, no record of mental illness, depression etc , epilepsy, just apply you will get it. dont jump in with basc etc, at the moment, reason if you choose to join a local clay group they may insist, you use their insurance company. dont want to pay out twice. how will the basc help mate BASC can offer advice and support, they know (or should know) the law inside out etc. Being a member will also give you insurance, although I've got to admit I've never looked into exactly what this covers. Ferret Master
But you wouldn't (hopefully) want to obtain one without a good reason would you, so if asked just state what you will be using it for. (Not bank jobs ) FM
