Baldrick
I haven't found anything to beat a WAM call yet. Seems to work very well so far. I almost always shoot on my own, and using a WAM, I still have a free pair of hands to use for shooting with (not for rubbing polystyrene on windows). Birdboy
Hi Baldrick, Ive just had my Wam delivered and it just seems to be a very basic disc with a hole in and when i blow or suck it sounds rubbish. What am i doing wrong ?? Or is there an inner part missing. Cheers Gaz
sandersj89
Hi Baldrick, Ive just had my Wam delivered and it just seems to be a very basic disc with a hole in and when i blow or suck it sounds rubbish. What am i doing wrong ?? Or is there an inner part missing. Cheers Gaz Yep. a simple round piece of brass which is holllow, hole in the middle. I either use it hands free, pop the disc in my mouth infront of my teeth, hold it in place with my lips. I can then call without holding it leaving my hands free to work the lamp and rifle. You can also use it by holding it over your lips and blowing through the hole. By varying the pressure of your blow you can make very quite mouse type squeaks up to a reasonably loud rabbit squeal. I have also recently picked up one of these: http://www.foxcalluk.co.uk/about.php. Yet to use it in anger, but I find the wam fairly quite on a windy night or if the fox is a looong way away. This other call is very very loud, you can produce a wide variety of calls by varying the pressure on the plastic with your teeth. I like the sound it produces and hope to try it out tomorrow night weather willing. Jerry
Baldrick
Birdboy, the WAM call is very simple. It's just a question of practising. Practise inside at home, as practising calls in the field isn't wise unless you are ready for what shows up. You may also do such a poor job with your calling that you spook what's actually listening. You should have a look at the first four videos on this link, which show Robert Bucknell (the foxing maestro) showing you how to get the best from a WAM call: http://www.youtube.com/results?search_quer...mp;search_type= I stick the WAM call in my gob and can call quite well both breathing in and breathing out. It's a slightly softer, mellower note than a wigeon whistle.
sandersj89
One trick with the wam that works sometimes is to place it in your mouth to call but place the tip of your tongue over the hole to block the air every now and then, this gives a staccato type call that can attract their attention when sometimes they just don’t want to react. Jerry When practising indoors make sure the cat, dog and wife are out, for the first 2 as they can go nuts with the call, for the last one in case she complains of a head ache….. Birdboy
Thanks Sanders & Baldrick, The link was excellent to YouTube. Ive now realised my WAM i have got is dented as it doesnt make a clear whistle sound - so that is why i couldnt get a clear noise through it. Great timing too, as i have just had my field officer left me at 6pm tonight granting me my FAC !! so im gonna be off to my local tomorrow to pick up my .22 and .223 thats been on order for the past month !! Great feeling . . . . . Thanks for the responses. Gaz

ogre6br
here are some fox whistle ideas http://www.tenterfieldfoxwhistle.net/ there is links to sounds as well on here one of my mates calling one in a write up of the whistle used http://ausvarmint.com/av/index.php?option=...2&Itemid=28 how to make fox whistle from a jam tin lid http://s13.photobucket.com/albums/a284/woo...01Image0002.flv how to use it http://s13.photobucket.com/albums/a284/woo...00Image0061.flv more info http://www.tomvarneyfoxshooting.com/Video%20Clips.htm more With me it was trial and error at first which didn't produce results. But then I read that they should be around 3-4mm from the edge. I tried to drill them when the metal was flat (ie before I bent it). I marked the centre line and then the holes, drilled etc. Went to bend it and of course it did not bend where I wanted it to, so don't do it that way. Next attempt was to bend it into that shape but aim to have both sides parallel, that way when you drill your first smaller hole the bit goes through both sides at the same distance from the edge. Flip it over and drill out that hole with the bigger drill bit, that way you get rid of the exterior burrs too. Might be an idea to use a nail or nail punch to dent the metal where you intend to drill to stop the drill bit from wandering. Oh and use a vice!! hope this helps later p
