Chard
Apart from the obvious insurance policy and a monthly magazine is it worth joining? If you want to shoot seriously at competition level, it would be difficult without being a full member (i.e. not even just a Clubman member). If you don't, then I have my doubts. BASC would probably do more for you. CPSA aren't in my good books lately. I'll reserve judgement until after the current saga at my local clay club is settled . As you have already said, the insurance is worth having, the mag is not a bad read sometimes. but I personally don't feel I get anything else out of it, but then again I only have Clubman membership (for the insurance) If however, you do shoot at top competitive level, they will jump through hoops for you if you massage the right bits, and they'll become your big stick if you want to distort facts and lean on a clay club that has upset you Edited May 25, 2008 by Chard
webber
I would generally agree with Chard. If you are into live quarry shooting you really need to join BASC, as CPSA will not lif one finger to support or preserve the shooting of fur and feather. webber
Bagsy
I've been a member for a few years but rarely shoot competitively. I renew because I want to support the sport and when the odd registered comp comes up which I want to shoot I'm able to do so. To be honest I'd say I don't get value for money. Insurance aside the few comps I do shoot shoot don't make it worthwhile but at least I've got the membership if I need it. I never think they do enough for the little man at grass roots level. If you want to be the next George Digweed then everything is there for you. If you want to shoot socially at local clubs and simply enjoy the sport then there is nothing for you (or the club). Being someone who shoots nearly every weekend locally that suggests the organisation is missing something. Few of the local clubs I shoot at (if any) and people I shoot with are members which means they are missing out on a huge potential membership - it simple isn't worth the average guy joining. Maybe the new chairman will have a rethink? If he can make the CPSA more appealing to the everyday shots, who after all keep the sport alive, then he will crack it and might see membership rocket. If he doesn't it will remain elitist. Edited May 25, 2008 by Bagsy
MC
Maybe someone ought to send the new chairman a link to this forum so he can see for himself the feelings of it's members at grass roots level. We get good input from David BASC so why not the CPSA? cheers Martin
poontang
I joined for the badge, everyone knows badges make you shoot better. FACT!! I'm joining again next year too, as it's a nicer badge!!
clayman
Supporting keeping shooting alive is the biggest reason to join and support a National Governing Body. Even though 90% of clay shooters may not be paying a sub to the CPSA, they are all benefiting from the political lobby this and other organisations, NRA, NSRA etc , put up. Without organisations such as the CPSA representing shooters interests, the anti's would have made our shooting a lot harder ( remember 14 days per year tried to come in back in the 90s, it was organisational pressure that reverted it to 28days). CPSA's strap line is Furture of our Sport - and by this they mean that they are holding a lot together for all our benefits, so its a good reason to keep them funded and join their ranks. Numbers mean a lot when it comes to lobbying the regularitory bodies, and lobbying costs money. Clayman
shaun4860
Hmmmmm For the moment its the CPSA... they have tried once to drop "pigeon" from the title and they wont let it rest there...... I was one of the 3% of members at the time who bothered to vote against the name change and we won..... apathy rules ok i no longer shoot registered targets so when my renewal was up i asked for clubman membership (bearing in mind i had been a member for about 5 years) Their answer was NO....i must pay to be a full member or leave and rejoin in 12 months time as a clubman When i again wrote to them asking about their wanting to change the name to clay target (which in my opinion was to distance themselves from live quarry shooters) then why were they they promoting the fact that they would be at the major gamefairs to increase membership when i said that gamefairs were the very place live quarry shooters were likely to frequent. The reply i got was if or not i was renewing my membership? In my opinion the CPSA are so far up their own backsides its unreal..... so no i did not and will not be giving them another penny Rant over....... sorry shaun
