Are you sure its rust under the bluing ?

Many years ago, I attempted to renovate an old guns bluing, with a bottle of DIY bluing from the Gunshop.

It wasn't cheap and I followed the instructions to the letter.

The outcome was very disappointing, with the main problem a lack of eveness in the distribution of the bluing.

I ended up getting it done by the Gunshop and it wasn't that expensive.

It might be worth getting a quote, or two, you might be suprised.

I know a few members have blued their own guns, perhaps they might post with some more encouraging DIY advice.

Ive never achieved satisfactory results with any home blueing kit - they're ok for touching up any out of the way scratches, but for a half decent finish they always leave summat to be desired.

The best way is to get em reblued, if you didnt pay much for the gun, 30 quid or so isnt a lot to invest to make the gun look a whole lot smarter

If you dont know any good gunsmiths who will do it I can point you in the direction of one - or there is a company in Birmingham who specialise in reblueing

The barrels on Baikals are meant to have a slight rust like appearance. They do this to make the blueing stick to the barrels, as they use a cold blueing process for the barrels unlike other manufacturers which use a hot blueing process. They do this as the barrels are soldered, not welded together, and hot bluing would make the barrels come apart.

Be careful doing this as too much can be a nightmare. Very fine wire wool, WD40 and rub very lightly. Rub too much and its all gone, just enough and it will take off any rust whilst bringing what blueing there is back up. Keep the barrels well oiled after this.

FINE wire wool. Rub too hard and you will have to buy some coarse wire wool to knit yourself a new set of barrels
