My first Fox with the .223 (and graphic pic of rabbit)

So soon after the first Fox with my HMR, I've now had my first with my .223! This time a bigger Dog, shot at (would you believe) less than ten yards!

I was led on a large heap of scalpings to get a better view of the field, with the rifle on the bipod. I'd shot a couple of rabbits and spotted the Fox about 150 yards out but he walked into the beans before I had chance to shoot. About ten minutes later I turned my head about 45 degrees to my right after spotting movement, and the bloody Fox was stood staring right at me about twenty feet away! I wont repeat what went through my mind, as I was certain he'd leg it as soon as I moved. After a second or two of thinking I decided that at this close a range, he would be worthy of a texas heart shot if he ran away :good:

I moved the gun around and found him looking rather blurry with the crosshairs on his chest. In a split second I'd pulled the trigger without thinking, and he was down.

Here's me looking very pleased with myself......

Quite a nice picture I think. I was surprised how little damage was done at such close range after hitting this bunny at about 120 yards earlier in the day....

Sorry it's a bit graphic, but I had to take a picture of this. This is how I found it, with Dirty Harry as my witness. How did it end up like that :good:

The gun seems to be settling in nicely now it's had a few rounds down it. I was using 55grn Remington softpoints that night, which seem to group ok and certainly made a mess of the rabbit. I've loaded some 52grn A-Max loads to the spec given to me by a chap on anoher forum. It's quite a soft recipe, but he tells me the load has shot sub 1/2" at 100 yards through several CZ varmints. I'll range test them first, but hopefully they'll bring me more luck in the future :good:

Mark...If you're talking about the fox, I can be certain it's not "I'll be back"! He's had his last day on the pheasants :good:

It killed the Fox with very little mess, I'd say the exit wound was no more than an inch, just behind the front shoulder. The bullet went in the front as he was standing staring right at me. When I picked the rabbit up however, the other side was gone! All the guts fell out on the floor! :good:

The moderator fitted to the rifle is a Wildcat Predator 8, with a .30cal baffle set. I fit it to both my .223 and 6.5x55, and I find it does the job very well :good:

Well folks, I took NJC out to show him how it's done and he bags a bloody fox.

As he said he was on top of a pile of scalpings and I was sitting in the truck on aim with the HMR. I had a rabbit as did he and about 5 minutes later I thought he was getting up to come back to the car then BANG! He said 'I GOT IT'. I was scanning the horizon looking for a rabbit but no, none to be seen. I asked him where it was and could not believe it. It was on the bloody pile in front of him. Not 10 paces away.

Total was 11 rabbits and the fox.

No doubt my Fox will go down in the notes as a Harry kill. I think I've earned him a pat on the back from the farmer, and for that reason hopefully I'll be invited again. We spent the rest of the evening debating how many Rabbits Harry would need to get to equal my Fox. I have to say, he was trying extremely hard to get his numbers up! :good:
