Barrier Warning Tape

Recommended Posts

May be of interest to some of you. Alot of my permissions have some walkers who contunie to walk their dogs on private land. Not an awfull lot I can do about that apart from keeping a lsit of who they are and passing the info onto the land owner.

that said I still have a job to do and want to do it as safely as possible. I have signs that I have made up that i place either side of the lanes I shoot up on my orchards. as some added protection I have just purchased some barrier tape. http://www.apetape.co.uk/gbu0-prodshow/barriertape.html Fairly cheap and I can stretch it across the areas I dont want people to walk easily.

Yeah i know Henry. But short of standing to people each side of the are you are shooting there is not lot more I can do. It's just a damage limitation excercise.

Doing this I have done pretty much everything I can to ensure safety.

I nearly shot some blokes Whippet at the weekend. He said he saw the sign's but did not think to put his dog on the lead. So when I explained to him that the bullet travlled at about 2500MPH and was capable of killing a fox he whistled for his dog (and this bit made me laff, given the chap was built like a brick you know what) "LuLu come here darling" :good:

Unfortunately you can only put barrier tape and signs up to warn people, they are there to stop people but if they want to gothrough it you cant stop them.

The same with me if I am cutting down trees we have to put barrier tape and signs up but they still come through the barrier tape, so we always have a banks man to either to stop us doing our work or stop the person for a while if we a cutting halfway through a tree. Or tell them of an alternative route around the felling site.

Do you specify 'shooting in progress' on your signs? I realise this might bring it's own problems if you're concerned with Antis etc but with a strong enough message it might lower the numbers of people willing to enter that area. Just a thought.

We actually went one further on the farm I live on, which features a large copse next to a byway frequented by the local quad-bikers and off-roaders. The drivers/riders insist on driving around this copse (private property), which contains a rearing pen and a lot of other wildlife. We ended up concreting 6'x4' metal signs on steel legs into each access point created by the trespassers, and ring-fencing the entire cops with two-strand steel wire. The wire is wrapped in hazard tape to remain visible. The signs simply state: 'wildlife conservation area - highly sensitive to disturbance'. It seems to have worked so far, but it was not cheap to install the signs.

Anyone faced with people claiming a right of way should notify the landowner. Although it takes 20 years of constant use to create a public right of way, it is worth nipping the problem in the bud before the bobble hat brigade start making claims about their rights. A statutory declaration made under Section 31(6) of the Highways Act will protect the landowner.

Yes the signs i have (which are home made, painted in Red Letters) say.

Shooting With Rifle In Progress, please do not walk past this point.

I put 2 signs each side of the group of lanes I will be working, thats normally a width or Orchard of about 400 yards.

Henry, I love those signs I may get some made up along the lines off.

With regards Anti's i dont pay any attention or have any time for them. I do get the odd annoying tough man walk through, in fact one this weekend. i advised him not to walk where I was shooting. he said "Why?" now this type of behaviour i cant tollerate. I said "for your own safety as I am shooting a rifle" he said "if those bullets touch me there will be trouble" i said "if those bullets touch you, you would probably be dead" now that probably wound him up even more, but for F sake. What does it take to get these people to understand they should not be there.
