When this one rusted away, I used an ammunition box and a gas burner, much more sophisticated, well, a lot easier to use.

If I can find a pic of the Mk2, I will post it. Only use oak sawdust though, or some hardwoods, you can get very bitter tastes from some wood.

Try looking on google for "pit bbq smoker". It seems to be a USA thing designing them this way, but lets you do hot & cold smoking in the same bit of kit. We made one last year but a bit small; I think you need the diameter to be at least 14" otherwise you have to stoke it up every 40 minutes. The principle works well.
