Salop Matt
Hay folks just after some help, our dog Bryn isnt cleaning himself properly so now we are stepping in as we dont want him picking up a water infection. He does attempt to give it a go on the odd occasion but isnt doing it offen enough or thorughly. He`s 13 months old and has always been the same but seems to be dirtyer now as if he`s cleaning himself less and less. Any advice on getting him more interested in doing it and also to get him doing it thoroughly ?

lurcherboy
Cover him in butter but don't go mad. It works on cats or so I have been told. LB

gdunc
I'm sorry if i'm missing something but mine just get washed with the hose (or the watering can) and some shampoo from time to time - maybe once a fortnight. They also get brushed the odd time as well to keep their ears free of matted bits and that's about it. I thought it was just cats that cleaned themselves? gdunc
Is washing them that often a bit excessive ? dont it strip there coats of the natural oils ? It's about as regular as you can without damaging the oils and in these (mostly) drier months they'll need less than when they're out working. The usual motivator is if they've been training in ponds or the like and need a freshen up - I like my girls to smell nice

Salop Matt
It is his bottom and privates that i was refering to ! Most dogs i know at night tend to give themselfs a good wash all over, how ever little bryn occasionally does his paws and thats it.

I kinda thought that was what you were on about initially but the butter and honey stuff threw me I wouldn't worry about it too much, as he ages he'll probably get more 'into' it. If his stools are good he shouldn't need to do any cleaning there either.

gdunc
If he has a dirty backside you maybe want to change your feeding. Some dry foods can cause a lot of mess and it can take a bit of trail and error to find one which gives the required firm stools to keep your dog 'cleaned out'. I feed my spaniels on CSJ and it works well - no gland problems at all Another option is feeding raw. I dont do this personally but people I know swear by it and it gives solid pellet type stools. Maybe i'm just talking ****
Quist
Mine goes in the river twice a week to do a few retrieves or else in the sea. I never wash him with shampoo but I do use a grooming brush from time to time. If he's getting dags, it sounds like he needs a more solid diet. Try a few bones and scraps and a little less tinned food
bob300w
You could just trim the hair around his nether regions so that there is nothing for it to stick to?
