Paul in North Lincs.
I've just been given some rat shooting over a free range poultry farm, which is teeming with rats, other conventional methods are struggling to control numbers, so I was asked if would have a go, as part as an ongoing battle. Having only shot the odd one or two, I was wondering if any of you chaps could advise me on the the way to prepare and conduct the onslaught - there is a beck runniong throught the farm, so I would imagine that alot of the rats are holding up there. These have never been shot at before, so I hopefull for some good bags, Any tips or Hints? My thanks in advance Paul in North Lincs.
pigeon master
What I would do is go to the farm with a bag full of chocolate chunks. Spread them in various places around the farm to get the rats used to it. Once they have, as soon as they smell it in the future they will expose themselves so they can be shot. Its a fantastic rat bait and once they've had a taste they will go for that before almost anything. Give it a try and see what your reults are. Jon-Boy
This is a wicked tip which i use! Get yourself a couple of packets of mini chedders and open a very small hole in them. Place the packets near the entrances to the rat holes and sit near by in the dark. Wait until you hear the rustling of the packet as the rats try and force their way into the packet, turn your light on,or night sight and BANG! a rat in the bag. This way the rats will feed without fear because you are not constantly searching with your lamp or infra red beam from your night sight. Simply listen for the packet that is being moved, point your rifle in the direction, on goes the lamp, simple! Works very well! Night sight is the better option, try soviet bazaar, (no connection) i use a pns 4-6X52 Nv scope and is perfect for spotting them at 15 yards plus. only £
bobthenailer22
get hold of some card board tubes about 18 inch or longer. cut 1/4 inch slots in the tube every couple of inches. put these down around known runs. when you have shot one the others with it will dash off to hide, the tubes in the rats mind will be perfect because they have the i cant see you then you cant see me mentalty. thru the slits you can easly get an accurate aiming point and shoot thru the cardboard tubes. give it a try it works wonders you get to pick off all the rats which would have normally bomb burst for home. to attract them out i favour some tins of cat food the smelly pilchard stuff (the cheaper the brand the more it smells) stab some holes in the can and you can hear when they roll it about trying to get to the contents. a word of warning pick up daed rats as you would dog **** i.e hand in a bag then turn inside out rats carry all sort of nasties from wiels disiese to heppertitus c and a lot more in between. good shooting. regards bob
