Fatcatsplat
Just got meself a Browning GTi (soft top with go-fast stripes) and the chokes that came with it are all for skeet - Looking to get a set of 1/4 and 1/2's, but must admit to being a bit of a numpty when anything gets technical - What's the advantages/disadvantages of the chokes being flush fitting, ported or extended? Shoot mostly sporting clays (actually shoot mostly sky.....lots and lots of sky), with a wee bit of rough shooting when i can get it. Any advice/comments appreciated. Gordon R
Get the flush fitting - cheapest. Ported chokes are a gimmick. Extended - longer choke (in theory a longer taper), but dearer than flush.
Fatcatsplat
Cheers Gordon - And no techno speak either!
casts_by_fly
extended chokes are easier to take out and change. If you were trying to do something 'special' like shoot really long range, shoot buckshot, turkeys, etc then there can be benefits to extended chokes. The longer choking cone is one. But for what you're asking flushmount is fine too. When you say that all you have are skeet chokes, do you mean skeet 1 and skeet 2? If so then you'll be just fine for a whole lot of shooting with them. That is only slightly more open than IC/mod (1/4, 1/2) and will kill birds out further than most people can judge lead. You'd be better off getting your shooting skills down first before you worry about chokes. A sk2 choke will stone a pheasant at 40 yd if you center it.
