HaveToShoot
Hi All Since moving here from Canada in 2000 I have been at this pigeon game and absolutely love it!!!!!! I have shot alot of different types of flying game and had some excellent waterfowl hunting back home. I used to be addicted from Sept to Dec BUT have to say that these woodpigeons are what I feel the most sporting of the lot. Its a small target, fast agile and when you hit it right the decoying is second to none. Plus the best is NO closed season. Ive met other guys in the field saying "OH but you must have had good shooting back home" when they found out where I was from. My reply is always "you dont know how lucky you are" I guess sometimes theres the grass is always greener thing. Trust me if you have pigeon shooting relish it. I know I am. anser2
Woodpigeon shooting is great sport and I expect everyone on here will have their favoured form of shooting , but for me true coastal wildfowling is the cream of all shotgun shooting. Ok you may go for days or even weeks at a time without a shot , but thats not what wildfowling is all about. Its settling in a frosty creek in the dawn darkness hearing the geese waking out on the flats praying that for once the birds will be low enough and you are in the right place or the rush of wings as a pack of wigeon tear out of the sunset locked onto your decoys or pintail boreing into a gale over the breakers that makes wildfowling not the shooting and when you are successful it is the cream on the cake. One goose shot below the sea wall is a success , but most of us would feel a single pigeon would be poor reward for a days work.

Pigeon shooting is as good as it gets and im lucky as i have quite a bit A poor mans sport as they say Ooooh yes (in Churchill voice), there is no other sport with a shotgun that gives the variety of shots that pigeon shooting does. Poor man's sport or not, there is nothing to compete with it.
Highlander
Never a 'poor mans sport' pigeon shooting is fit for kings! The best sporting shooting there is, mind you snipe, woodcock and teal come a close second but probably only because they are limited by seasons. biakalblaster
the only other shooting I do is shotgun for rabbits, and .22 rimfire for rabbits and I rate pigeon shooting as the better sport out of these there are so many different types of pigeon shooting too, I do walk abouts with the gun to get pigeons passing by or flying out of woods stand in flight line in a clearing in a long strip of pine forest and try and hit supersonic pigeons then there is decoying which I am getting into this year and at last having success, decoy shooting i have found can be easier to hit the birds, if you get them coming in smoothly, and just before they land, but there is challenge of getting decoys in right place, getting the birds coming in and not being spooked by you or deeks, when it all clicks and you get the birds coming in its brilliant fun and great sport
casts_by_fly
I still like eastern grouse and woodcock. I prefer dog work and I prefer to walk to find my birds. There isn't a much tougher shot than a grouse at 20 yards that has literally exploded from a grapevine and through some alders or laurel. 1 bird on the ground /9 jumped is a good average to strive for. Throw in the random woodcock that pops up from an open area where there surely wasn't a bird a minute ago and you've got a days fun. That said, pigeons are a nice substitute. Can't beat the year round season on them and the abundance of birds. Roost shooting is like nothing else I've experienced. Thanks, Rick
HaveToShoot
Its really suprising here how its looked on as "poor mans sport". Shooting here differs in the way that it seems to revolve around the upper class. Im not used to that. Back home if you hunt your more of a redneck I too enjoyed woodcock and grouse over the pointers. Rabbits over the beagles was great too. These pigeons though really are first class sport.
