My GWP has a re-occouring ear infection, both ears. Just wondering has anyone had a similar problem. Got an ear wash from the vet this time will have to wash out her ears with it once a week its called 'Oticlean', just wondering does anyone know of any home remedies that might work aswell have heard of using vineagar and olive oil was another one.

What kind of infection.

Is it a dark brown / black gunge that smells disgusting. If it is it may well be ear mite. Search this section for posts regading this, but one solution I have tried and still am trying is Thornit Ear Powder, as per recommended by NTTF.

Trev

Thanks Trev! :good:

I have read the posts.

I've already done a search.

I've been to the vets 3 times with her.

If it was an ear mite you'ld see them and the rest of my dogs would have them aswell.

And if you've tried Thornit and still trying Thornit, your dog has probably got an ear infection and you'ld best get it to the vets and get it sorted.

The symptoms are similar thick waxy brown sticky goo coming from the ears, lots of head shaking and the ears are sensitive to touch.

I'm am a bit concerned that this is not going away, can anybody advise please?

SORRY I DON'T REALLY HAVE ANY DEFINATE SUGESTIONS, AS I ASKED PWM IF THEY COULD HELP ME WITH AN EAR MITE PROBLEM.

ONE THING I CAN SAY FOR DEFINATE IS IF YOUR DOG HAD EAR MITE IT DOESN'T MEAN ANY OF YOUR OTHER DOGS WOULD GET EAR MITE. I HAVE A NUMBER OF DOGS AND IT USUALLY ONLY ONE DOG THAT GETS IT.

DOES THE RECURRING EAR PROBLEM HAPPEN ALL YEAR ROUND OR JUST IN HOT HUMID WEATHER?

ACTUALLY ONE THING I CAN SUGGEST IS TO CLIP YOUR DOGS EARS. THIS WAY THE EARS DON'T GET SO HOT AND SWETTY WHICH SEEMS TO BE A PROBLEM WITH MY DOG.

I HAVE TRIED WHITE VINAGAR & WHISKY. SOMETIMES WHISKY WILL WORK, DEPENDING ON HOW BAD THE WAX IS. WORTH A GO THOUGH.

Hi.

My labrador suffers from the same problem with her ears. After many visits to the vets and many £££££££££'s spent they eventually diagnosed a fungal infection likely due to a smaller than usual ear canal that when it gets wet doesn't dry out properly.

The vet recommended I use an ear wash called cleanaural once a week. one of the ingredients is iso propyl alcohol which i believe is the ingredient that grabs the moisture and helps it to evaporate from the ear canal. Not 100% sure how it works but can assure you 100% it does.

My dog still gets the odd flare up but the ear wash keeps it at bay and treats it when it does.

hope this helps

Excellemt stuff, the vet gave me an ear wash called Oticlean its ingredients are Cremephor, Calendula extract, basil oil and purified water. The vet said she has narrow ear canals aswell. I suppose the warm weather and moisture don't help either as Huntinglass said.

I know this might sound daft but would some sort of anti fungal foot powder help to keep the ear dry and free from any sort of bacterial/fungal infection?

I am 90% sure that your dog has ear canker. does your dog go into water? water takes a long time to dry out in a dogs ear as they need circulation of air to dry them and thats difficult with dogs with long ears. Get some cotton buds and clean them every time your dog goes into water and other things like deep cover. Especially round the summer months.

Edit: You just need to clean them you can get some Ear wipes look on internet for them

I do know what this topic is about!! I was simply correcting you when you stated

'If it was an ear mite you'ld see them and the rest of my dogs would have them aswell.'

As it doesn't always pass onto other dogs.

Maybe I didn't explain well, but my dog has had a ear INFECTION in which I use whisky or vinagar. And yes sometimes it works depending on how bad the ear wax is and whether you catch it early enough.

Puppies are the most likely to get ear mites, adult dogs mostly get ear mites from a new puppy been bought into the house.

I am really sure it is ear canker clean the ear and try give it some ventilation so you not giving the bacteria a good environment. Cutting hair around the ear I wouldn't recommend as it is usually foreign objects that enter the ear that causes it.
