Quercus
I have just bought a new computer and upgraded my conection to broadband. My new machine runs Windows XP, which tells me that it has its own firewall protection built in. I was wondering, is this firewall really any good or should I consider buying some dedicated software? What do you all use and recommend? Q :(

Cranfield
The XP Firewall is fine, but remember if you get another Firewall, disconnect the XP one. If you try to run two Firewalls you will have problems.
ernyha
I have just replaced my Norton security with a complete package from McAfee and they strongly recommended disconnecting the Windows firewall which I have done.
Wookie
I'd be suspicios of any type of firewall that MS produces, but only because it's my job to be. The thing is, without getting something like Zonealarm or Black Ice, you are stuck unless you want to get a cheap second machine and bung linux on it with IPTables or IPchains. The problem with that route is that you need to maintain it and it's another machine in the house. See what happens is my advice. If it works, you should be fine. Jonnyni
I have tried most of the main leaders in personal firewall software and would recommend Sygate Personal Firewall Pro. You can get a trial version to try for free. Turn off windows built in firewall but only after you install a replacement. You will also need an anti-virus program. F.Protect McAfee Kapersky F.secure Are some of the best products on the market Enjoy Broadband
Wookie
Damn you all and your Broadband capability! I live a short stone's throw from BT and yet broadband stops at what is laughingly called a river just over the hill. All I get is the world's slowest dialup - 31.2 k/sec on a good day. It takes _ages_ for porn to download... Wookie
Quercus
Thank you all for your input. As there doesn't seem to be any issues with the built in version I shall stick with it for the moment. Q
