HARRIS
I got some cards made up for gaining pigeon shooting with my shotgun. I have been taking out my 11 yr old son with his air rifle and also ordered him a set. Maybe for your birthday or Christmas you could ask for some? You can customize them and put on them that you are a member of BASC, willing to do odd jobs, your contact details etc. I have been taking my boy out and have more shooting for him than you can shake a stick at. In my opinion the cards let the farmer know that you are serious and wont muck about on his land. It may set you apart from the rest Heres the link Shooting Cards Website Good luck and safe shooting WHat do you do with the card do you just give it to the farmer when you go to speak to him like a buisness card? HARRIS
14 years old and wants to go shooting...get yourself a mentor, someone older and wiser (not your mates) who knows the ropes and then learn to walk before you run. I think you are right here. I think i might have jumped in to early. But the difficulty is no one in my family shoots or knows much about hunting. But there is a few people i could ask to take me through the basics before i try by myself. Thank you for bringing me back down to earth

Ferret Master
From the age of 14 you can use an airgun unaccompanied on private land providing you have permission. You will need to get someone to give you a lift there though. The idea of a mentor is a good one. Providing it is edible, shot quarry is usually eaten or given away. Inedible species should be disposed of in a responsible manner by deep burying or incineration. FM

So you've accepted the need to learn now how to do that... a) Talk with the people at BASC especially in your own region, they have plenty of info etc for young shots and will encourage you no end, maybe even help with a mentor. find a local keeper (a good one as there are a lot out there who aren't worthy) who needs a hand (and if they don't they aren't doing the job right!) and offer some help. Only you'd better be the type that works hard and doesn't let people down because that's the fastest way to tick people (especially keepers) off. Good Luck. scout
Hi Harris I think the approach you are taking is spot on and there has been some great advice given so far. I do a lot of work with 14 - 25 year olds and I must say your attitude so far has been commendable. If you were down this way I would be willing to take you out and give you some advice and experience. Make sure you stay in touch with the forum and get some experience, I am sure in the near future you may find that someone local will be willing to offer you some experience. In the mean time speak to your local keeper and be polite, punctual and helpful, you'll be amazed how much this will help. cheers Scout
HARRIS
Cheers scout the response from the forum has been better thn i thought. initially i thought tht everyone just wouldnt bother but everyone has been a real help. I will try and find a local keeper and as soon as i get my insurance (basc) i will be straight round all the local farms. Scout you are the nearest person to me on here cheers everyone
scout
I'm sure there's someone closer than a 200 mile round trip, but if you are ever down this way I'll take you out and share my limited wisdom. Provided you're insured and follow my safety rules, and your parents are happy with the situation.
buckfast d
Can i just say i have read through every single post on this topic and what a bunch of gents you ALL are, everyone is giving this young cub every bit of advice he needs in every aspect from manners (what he has anyway) to safety to just basically everything. Wouldn't it be just so nice to hear back from Harris that he is sorted with a bit of vermin sport or that someone on here has taken him under there wing when i started out i was so lucky to fall in with a very elderly man (over 75) who i enjoyed some very good tips and craic from. Harris son stick with it and you will fall in with someone some where

Kevitree
Morning Harris, Like scout has said you seem to be doing all the right things, Have a look at http://www.nobs.org.uk/ you might be able to locate a shoot near you. Unfourtunatly the shoot I beat on is closer to scout than it is to me or I would invite you along for a day on that. Keep at it, its hard work but the rewards can be good.
