Plumbob
Its not our fault, there are 60,000 to few plumbers due to cuts in training. The CITB does'nt regocnise plumbing as part of the construction industry so will not help out with training apprentices. But most importantly we will only go to the houses with the best biscuits my advice is tell them you have a fresh pack of hobnobs with the plumbers name on. Dunkield
I did my own, the whole lot apart from installing the Velux windows and the plastering. That and designing and building the new staircase made it the most satisfying project I have done on the house. It cost next to nothing in real terms and by all accounts adds thousands to the house value. As stated, the only problem is the lack of storage, you have to be fairly brutal with clearouts. snozzer
Any tips guys doing one with my mate then starting mine Couple of tips. Buy decent tarpaulins and rope before you start, big enough to cover any holes in the roof that you may make. Check the weather forecasts and pick a dry day (or 3) for the opening up part. If you are fitting velux type windows make sure you get the right flashing kit for your roof tile/slate Make sure your drawings have been signed of by BC or approved inspector before you start If making a new opening to the loft, removedall the insulation in the area to be opened and then hoover the plaster joist from above before dropping the ceiling seal up with plastic sheeting rooms you want to keep free of dust On the day of cutting into the roof start early and finish late especially if building dormers Work out whether it will be easier to get materials into the loft space through the house or through the roof when you open it up If building dormers get scaffold erected, velux's can be done of ladders, but a scaffold will make the job quicker and safer People get scared of loft conversions, but the truth is they are really straight forward. Dunkield
Any tips guys doing one with my mate then starting mine If I did mine again, I would get Velux windows that pivot at the top and not half down the frame. If they are fully open then intrude into the room and you can whack your head on them.

All of that is absolutely 100% spot on. For ours, the tarp wasn't upto the job and we have water staining on most of the ceilings on the first floor now! ME
you have to be fairly brutal with clearouts. Mung told me that he can't wait to have a "brutal clearout" in the new en suite in his new loft extension so it must be a good point. MM
Sorry Myzeneye and Plumbob, it was a jest only. Of course you wouldn't send a plumber to fetch Death. Well, not if you had a solicitior handy anyway . Martin, where are these much-vaunted pics? You get us all steamed up to look at them, then nothing. This loft-teaseing must stop. We need loft-porn. Robert pervert!
