sitsinhedges
Tried my home made magnet with home made decoys on it today. definitely seemed to pull the pigeons in but once they get on top of it they seem to realise it isn't what they thought and they veer off whereas previously without it the pigeons would often try and land. Nothing to compare it to, so is this normal? ATB Andy
garyb
Sounds about right in my experience... The pigeon magnet can be the answer to all your problems, or the root cause of them. It's knowing when to use it & when not to, that makes the difference I strugled badly last time out with the magnet deployed... Let the battery run flat and then put it away - 10 mins later twice as many birds in the bag. Some will swear by them and won't leave home without it - I'm not so sure, and may only deploy to add a bit of movement if things are slow with regular deeks and bouncers. Si-Bore
If it draws them in (despite what happens after) its doing its job. The trick is to position the magnet so that as they approach the pattern they are within killing range before they realise the 2 flying pigeon are in fact dead and rotating at the speed of light on a motorised washing line. If in the ideal situation you have the wind on your back, try placing the magnet 8-10m in front of your hide, then the head of the 'U' shape another 10m away from that. This way, the birds will be flying into the pattern from the back and landing/attempting to land in the head of the 'U' without being too close to be put off by the magnet. Use dead birds on the magnet if you can as they will be much more effective. Much trial and error with placement etc depending on the hide and decoy pattern in relation to the wind direction and bird approach. Good luck Si
Highlander
There's probably very few (adult) pigeons that haven't seen or even been shot at over a magnet which might account for the shyness (if you believe that pigeons have a memory like us humans) but they still work some of the time just like other decoying ploys only pigeon shooting by it's very nature is a hit and miss (sic) affair. What works today may well not work tomorrow
sitsinhedges
I had another try today and though it was very quiet it seemed to me that the faster the magnet rotates the faster it pulls the pigeons in but equally the more spooked they get once on top of it, whereas if it is made to go really slowly they kind of just drift away from it, ie, they seem to feel less threatened by it, but also less attracted. Mmmmmmmmmmm. Unless you know different ATB Andy
HaveToShoot
Heres what I have found with limited experience mind you Since using my magnet have found it to be good on winter greens. Up here theres limited rape and mostly kale with not that many winter shooters. My best use of the magnet has been on laid crop. Here I have used Air Pros or dead birds to good effect and find it has worked the BEST when windy. On laid crop I have had them hovering over it facing into the wind.On stubble for me the magnet has failed miserably. I have spooked to many birds so dont even pull it out of the motor. Thats on barley, wheat and rape stubble. Flappers for me are the absolte best for stubble I have noticed that I need to be ready and concentrate more for passing shots with the magnet.
