moses
I was out after a fallow buck on Saturday morning. I got down to Wiltshire at 5.30 had a coffee and a chat with my mate and then we set off on foot to a couple of paddocks near a stretch of freshly thinned woodland. As we got closer we could hear bucks grunting and then the noise of antlers clashing but, we could'nt get a fix on them. We had to keep still as there was a large group heading straight towards us. I had the rifle over the sticks and as each deer went by we were both saying, doe, doe, doe, fawn, doe, doe, doe for what seemed like forever. Once they had passed we kept moving over the brow only to spot a decent buck but, with no safe shot we had to leave him be. We kept moving into another patch of woodland when we heard some more bucks grunting, we decided to follow our ears and kept moving towards it. We had been walking towards the noise for about 10 mins when we reached the edge of the wood which led us out behind the hedge of a large paddock that was dripping with deer. This was obviously where the noise was coming from and with that a Fallow buck broke cover and came out onto the ride grunting away. We spotted three bucks, one in the paddock to our right another in the wood to our left and one in front of us on the ride. It seemed he was not welcome in the wood or the paddock and was been bounced back and forth between two bigger bucks. He turned and came towards us, my mate gave him a shout up and I shot him in the neck off the sticks at about 80yds. He fell right back over himself and collapsed in a heap. alexm
Nice one, beautiful buck! Their necks really beef up for the rut don't they! How does all that extra testosterone affect the meat?
Highlander
Nice buck. You'd need a thick neck if you had to carry that lot around on your head 24/7 for the next few weeks! Meat certainly smells more rank during the rut but still good to eat (if you cook it right but I leave that to Mrs H) .243 Yes?
moses
big old boy wat rifle is that? .243? stuart The rifle is a Sako 75 in 6.5x55, I shot this buck using Sako 156grn factory ammo. What a beauty! Are you going to keep the skull? ZB Yes mate I will be keeping the head, My mates going to boil it out for me. Nice one, beautiful buck! Their necks really beef up for the rut don't they! How does all that extra testosterone affect the meat? I personally don't like to eat the bigger bucks anyway let alone during the rut. I don't know how it affects the taste of the meat really but, I would expect the offle would not be too tasty.
