Cosd
My friends permision has had rape laid a few weeks ago on half the farm and last week the other half was sewn with barley. I'm asking the experienced guys out there when we can expect the woodies to show some interest on these fields? I didn't go, but my friends went today and got absolutely nothing, not even a look in. I know there is still a bit of stubble around in adjoining fields where we don't have permision.
garyb
Are you sure you mean laid? Sounds more like drilled to me given the time of year ?!
magman
They will hit the rape when the weather get hard after a few frosts, the barley will have to wait till probably July next year when its becomes milky and laid

Cranfield
Watch any drillings, the birds will find them and feed. The only problem nowadays is that the drilling process is so efficient, they don't stay on the field as long as they use to.
activeviii
I know not a lot yet. im still trying. the rape was drilled 3 weeks ago on one of the field i shoot and it has just started to come though. theres grass like looking stems and 2 leaf seedlings. i dint know what the two are but it looks like to crops at the same time. i spoke to the contractor that was drilling and he said it was slow rape??? still none the wiser.lol. lastweek the other fields were done with wheat wit a red coating. no idea what that is either.hehe. just a few crow playing about on these fields. i went out under a flight line yesterday but thing had changed. on a field on another farm that was drilled at the beginning of the weeks, i could see something going on so i put a shot up...........oh my god, the field just moved like a blue carpet. there must have been thousand bird+ on there. i have permission on this land to shot but not with shotgun as theres people riding horses all the time. i moved so i was as close as i could get and tried all sorts to get the birds coming in but i had the wind in my face and these birds just wouldn't come in, they just kept dropping in just two fields away. after to many hours for one pigeon i gave up with them and changed to blacks. i ended with a few so was happy. proTOM1
Like others have said the rape will start getting more pigeons on when it gets a bit colder and there is less food about having said that keep an eye on it as i have had a good bag already as for the drilling if you see birds feeding on it dont waste your time give it ago as they soon move to the next !
