riffle help

Recommended Posts

i have just applied for a fac for a .22 and .17 plus sound mods to control rabbits on some of my permisson.

not going down the which is best .17 or .22 road. i have read lots on this site about that and still carnt make my mind up. fors and against for both me thinks.

but can anyone suggest some good riffles, scopes and mods for me to start looking at whilst i wait for my fac application to be processed. i have been shooting pigeons for about 6/7 years but dont really know riffles that well.

plus if i fit a sound mod will it reduce perfofmance. do i need certain types of amo to use with a sound mod.

any ideas

I love answering this question.

Get a SAKO Quad with synthetic stock. You can then buy both .17HMR and .22Lr Barrels. But be warned get the .17HMR barrel first because I almost gaurentee that you will not bother with the .22 once you've shot the 17HMR.

Scope wise - Don't bother with the advertised 'Quad' scope. Go for any you like but remeber .17HMR is good to 150 Yards (MAX) so get a scope with a reasonably sized objective lens. Also make sure you go for quick removable mounts so that you can change the barrels as quickly as you are meant to with a mutli barrel gun. The reason I say this is when you try to change the Quad's Barrels you have to cant the barrel upwards to remove it - with a scope of any moderate length you will find that the barrel will foul the bottom of the objective lens and you won't be able to remove it. If you have quick release mounts you can take the scope off whilst you change the barrels then replace it without losing your zero (al be it you will have to mark down the different Zero figures for the different calibres).

Moderator wise - SAK Mod is the best for the money without doubt. £33 gets you reasonable performance on .17HMR (but with this supersonic round you won't get anything better from any other make) and near total silence with .22LR.

ONE NOTE RE SOUND MOD - Have you requested it on your FAC if not you will have to apply for it to be ammended (MODS MUST BE ON YOUR TICKET as they are a part of a sec 1 firearm).

Ammo wise - I am reliably imformed that near all .17HMR ammo is made by CCI so get any you wish - one thing to note is the two types of .17HMR ammo out there (balistic tip - with a nylon expander tip in a copper coated 17 Grain bullet) and (Hollow point - Copper coated lead hollow point 20 Grain bullet)

I prefer the hollow points (called GAMEPOINT) as I find they hit harder with less fragmentation. SOme prefer the balistic tips because they are less likely to richocette. (AGAIN you need expanding ammo on your ticket - most FLOs expect this when you state vermin shooting and put it on as a matter of course but it is worth checking to make sure it goes on your ticket..)

Hope this helps.

Ok CZ's are cheap and do the job but you get a lot better build quality with the quad. Oh look I'm rhyming.

Seriously though it's horses for courses. If you have the money go for a quad or a Ruger both are excellent although the bolt throw on the ruger is a little excessive. If you just want to get out there and kill rabbits cheaply go for the CZ. Just remeber with the Quad you have the option to change calibres quickly, the xtra barrel will only set you back (£100 - £150) and you don't have to buy two scopes and two mods. And best of all you don't have to lend your other gun to your mates when you go shooting just because 'YOU'VE GOT TWO'.

If you do go for the cheap CZ I would deffinitely get a trigger upgrade as the stock one is RUBBISH.

..Its all about the money

No but every time you change the barrel you have to re zero

To a previously saved "new zero" You also don't need to move the scope if you get a short scope with side parallax, on slightly higher than usual mounts.

By memory (look way back in my previous threads on the quad) there are typically some 32 elevation clicks between the two calibres if the HMR is set at 100 yard zero, the LR will be right at 50 yards... within rabbit hunting tolerances.

On my current scope it works out one full turn up of the elevation **** to switch from HMR to LR.

OK then you swap a barrel then just play with the scope to the desired setting and off you go without testing zero :good:

Rather you than me

i would say go for the cz rifles, sak mod and the best scope you can afford to put on top of them. but if you wanted you could get both rifles 2 scopes mounts and 2 mods for £800 . i only use my .22 for lamping now since getting the hmr so i am thinking of turning it into a dedicated night vision combo. good luck with whatever you choose.

I know ya did  What I'm saying is, if I change my .22lr barrel and it's still on. And if I change a HMR barrel and it's still on. And if I change from one to the other, as long as I've recorded my zero, they should both be still on

John my way of thinking if i took a stock of i would check zero therefor if i took a barrel of i would recheck zero

Could be wrong but i would like to be sure :D

You're not taking the stock off though, nor removing the action, just the barrel

If I can tomorrow, just for the fun of it (not for arguments sake) I'll peg away at a few targets and take off and replace the barrel inbetween groups

Thanks John would be interesting :D

Here's the thread I started about Quad barrel changes without removing the scope.

http://forums.pigeonwatch.co.uk/forums/ind...d+barrel+change

With the benefit of time behind me I'm not going to say my zero has been cock on every time. It was usually 1/4"~1/2" at 50 yards when I had my Bushnell on it, but of late I have found problems keeping the HMR zero - even without changing barrels.

I had problems with a sound mod I modified the baffles in - alloy against steel corrodes when some gasses pass them  and I'm beginning to lose faith in my LaserScope... So I can't convincingly argue the barrels/scope/moderator don't lose their zero because I don't know for sure what is moving. I now have an ASE Ultra on the HMR which will at least rule out the sound mod problems. Darned quiet too :)

Until I resolve the issue I frequently now check my zero on a fairly unproductive permission before using the rifle anywhere else.

EDIT: It would be quite difficult to locate either barrel incorrectly due to a large flat area and bush that is used to positively locate it prior to locking it up with a mating large flat plate behind the retaining screw. I guess if it got some muck or dust on the flat it could drift as tad - which is why I say it's repeatable within bunny shooting tolerance rather than paper punching
