955i
OK, if I've got this straight: 1) Permissions are hard to come by sometimes because the farmers are not interested and sometimes because someone else has been busy collecting all the land in their county like trophies 2) Once you get one you need to go regularly (and learn how to fix tractors) So my questions are where would someone like myself who works all over the country and couldn't guarantee regular attendance (and can't fix tractors ) stand as surely the farmers would prefer someone who could attend on a regular basis, and what are the odds of finding someone in my area who would be willing to allow an occasional sharing of their permission on the odd days I could make it for a share of the take? Otherwise, what would my other options be to get some hunting in?
j.stuart
you could offer to milk the cows in replacement of the fixing tractors? im in same situation mate couple of people have all the land by me and it does my head in as theres no way they can shoot it all. i resorted to here and go out on invites.i dont like it as i want to get up and out as and when i feel but cant but on the other hand atleast im getting out. my advise would be to re write you post asking to tag a long with some one local. people who have all the land wont help but lads who have managed to get a little will i have noticed. if you posted i will pay 100 pound a day to shoot on your land this thread would be filled. why some people collect all the land when they cant shoot it all is beyond me but what i would do is keep knocking every few months sayin oh they dont seem to be doing much as theres loads of what ever flying or running round there. i did secure a claimed bit of land like that before but soon lost it on the same grounds as i got it"i couldnt shoot it regular". shooting regular costs and the farmers are use to getting it for free. ive got to the stage where ive asked that much i simply wont knock any more as i feel like im pestering them. mentioning airguns also seems to be a sin in farmers eyes as if your a little boy or some thing and many a time ive heard eh we got shotguns on,i just reply oh yea il shoot more then them any day of the week lol. dont give up mate
Cranfield
Even if you think that all the land local to you is already covered by other guns, that shouldn't stop you approaching the Farmers (especially when there are birds on the crops). The current shooters can not be everywhere all of the time and Farmers are not slow to notice this. If you can be available mid week, so much the better, as a lot of shooters can only go weekends and pigeons feed 7 days. I would agree that if you approach a Farmer to rid him of pigeons and you only have an air rifle, you are unlikely to be taken seriously. Whatever the pros and cons of air guns are, that is a real fact. Apply for your SGC as soon as possible.

POW!
I can endorse what Martin says , that Air guns are now concidered a better option , I am now doing just that! . Last year after the maize harvest, we had some guys ask the guy who grows it if they could shoot pigeon , He agreed , BUT as he was NOT the land owner it caused a row with the guys who pay to shoot here , Not only that they strayed onto the next farm , That does not sort its self over night !! . I have to say the Airgunners that have been here are a lot more responsible , and dont shoot at birds out of range , with both barrells , I know that there are good and bad in all hobbies , but the attitude that shooters are doing a favour is wearing thin , Look after what you have , The "Barter system " still works fine POW!
