Was planning on popping down to see Trevour at Country Pursuits on Monday to possibly put a deposit down on my first gun which will probably a Beretta 686 20, 28"...any ideas what I might get it for? also any advice re glasses (don't want to spend too much) as have leading right eye and have to cover left pupil?

Still not sure if I am rushing it as not found a club that wants me yet or fellow shooters...possible ones if they'l have me....is it best to get your gun then at least you have something to start with and fellow shooters trust you more?

joyoge,

Trevor won't rip you off, I do a lot of business with him, but it does pay to shop around, you could try Park Street Guns or possibly Chris Potter for a check price.

To help the lads answer your question...........is it new or secondhand..??

Also, if you're planning on shooting only clays, why go for a 20 bore, most posters on here have already advised you to go for a 12, using lighter loads, 24 or 21 gram if recoil is initially a problem...??

Do you shoot right handed, and are you saying you are right eye master, if so, why are you covering your left pupil..??

I buy my glasses from this guy:

http://www.stewardsportsglasses.co.uk/

They're not cheap, (about £200 per pair), I have 2 pairs of Zeiss tinted ones with a bit of prescription in them, and they are fantastic. If you don't need prescription glasses a lot of folks use ordinary good quality sunglasses with toughened lenses or Oakleys if you want to look really cool. :drinks:

With regards to possible shooting buddies, I know some of the guys in our area have already offered you a meet up at Broomhills, so you won't be Billy Joy Nomates for much longer..!!

As mentioned above Broomhills is a very friendly place to shoot within a reasonable distance from you. I would be more than happy to meet you there to dust some clays if your interested. I shoot (in general - ie pigeons/clays/rough etc) quite often with Nick (nickbeardo) and we go up to Broomhills on a reasonably regular basis. I'm sure he could bring his 20 bore (browning) along and I'm sure he would let you have a go to compare it with my (beretta) 12 Gauge O/U or his 12G semi-auto. You might want to take a trip to Park Street Guns (again mentioned above), take a look at there guns and grab some of there 'economical, ie cheap' 21Gram 12 gauge carts and you can compare them with some of my 28g clay and 32g game carts (just so that you get an overall idea of what the recoil etc is like with different loads - this is assuming that you may wish to progress to live quarry shooting).

One thing I would suggest is shoot as many different guns as you can before you purchase one (if you nail everything with a £200 gun, why pay anything more for something that you can only hit less with).

Re the glasses - I've no clue but hold off until you get yourself a local clay ground as I'm sure their instructors would be more than willing to advise you in this area.

PM me if your interested in meeting up.

hi Cat, thanks for your responses...yes the gun I would want would be secondhand...couldnt afford new...I took on board what others had advised and asked Trevour re 12bore and he said he would have to see me but thought it might be a bit heavy...I suppose it will depend on what he thinks....I do take it that a reputable gunseller would not sell me what isnt best for me just to make an extra buck?

re my eye...I think Chris said my right eye was doing what it should, being righthanded...but from memory, I think he said that my left eye was trying to take over as I was missing to the left? and when my left pupil was covered I shot better...although kept taking my head of the stock to see properly! dope! does that make any sense?

must admit do not have a lot of money for glasses or hearing protection at the mo so was going to go for the cheaper safety lenses, although I do have a nice pair of oakleys that are sunglasses...have 20:20 vision so eyesight ok.

yes some very nice young men have offered to meet at Broomhills, which I look forward to, but that isnt that close to me for a local ground and am trying to find a closer less expensive club, which is proving difficult to get into..a phone number of someone who runs it would be good, but websites only have email links that I do not get replies from...I will endeavour to keep on being a pain in the **** though!

Am I wrong in getting the gun before good eye and ear stuff?

Firstly re the clay ground - have you tried A1 in Barnet, I think it may be a little closer to you. Re 'do you get the gun first or the eye/ear stuff' - I can unequivocally say that you will hit more clays using a shot gun that throwing any amount of glasses or ear plugs at them…

I'm afraid there aren't too many shooting clubs on the outskirts of London, it's not as popular as golf, more's the pity.

Broomhills is about the closest to you, the A1 SG is obviously nearer, but the targets don't tend to be newbie friendly..!!

You must get ear protection, start off with a set of muffs, they'll also keep your ears warm in the Winter, NEVER shoot without them.

i didnt shoot too badly at A1, not so good at Broomhills, found the clays harder...although broomhills far nicer place.

are the squidgy things you stick in yr ears any good or can i still do damage to my ears? soz to keep asking questions but just want to get the right stuff....should i invest in the peltor sportacs or will they be too big for my small head?

thanks again everyone for all your help, this is a great forum

If your a cheap **** - like myself (northener) get youself some good ear plugs (PRO - will at least protect your lug holes - CON - you won't be able to hear any instruction). And from what I remeber Oakley's have polycarbonate lens' so are perfectly OK for clay shooting (ie will protect you from any stray clay fragments - not sure if it would help if your barrel blows up, but what are the chances.....)

Save up or ask for a set of peltors Etc for X mas - its never to late to ask (and who said it was the season of giving not receiving)

Re how much plugs/muffs protect your hearing check out the individual websites (look for dB noise reduction and compare) - Muffs are obviously better but you gets what you pays for
