berretta 686

I bought a new berretta 686 about two months ago, however my first day out with this gun did not go well, I loaded and waited for my first pigeon which arrived within minutes, I mounted my new gun and pulled the trigger, and pulled the trigger and pulled the trigger, finally the gun discharged but by this time my barrel had been pulled away from my target, I was not happy a few choice words were delivered such as goodness me there’s a thing, bless my sole. Yeah right. After regaining my composer I reloaded thinking well new gun probably just a little tight, it’ll loosen up, but did it loosen, my rear end did it loosen up, So my new gun was placed lovingly back in its case and returned to the seller, who was informed the trigger is far to tight, he assured me he would adjust this for me, two days passed the gun was returned to me adjusted and ready for action, my first two shots were delivered but still the trigger was tight and began to return to it’s forma position, I returned home and removed the stock my self only to find the whole trigger mechanism was completely void of any lubrication. And there was surface rust on some parts, I added gun grease to all moving parts and refitted the stock. I have since used the gun and am now a little happier with the trigger. I then decided I would like to fit a recoil pad to the stock, I returned to my local gun shop and after discussion was told my best choice would be a Kick-EEZ pad at a cost of around £40, I was also told I may have to adjust the new pad to fit my gun, what an under statement, the Kick-EEZ pad is more than ½ an inch bigger than my original I will be returning the new pad to the shop. I have to say my total experience with this berretta gun so far has been a complete and utter letdown, I spent a lot of money getting what I considered a top gun only to find I’m now wishing I had never bought it in the first place, watch this space.

Thanks for the replies chaps; I will be returning the recoil pad.

(utectok) you are quite right the gun shop is at fault regarding the condition of my gun. I will look into the GelTek pad many thanks and a merry Christmas to you as well.

(bqranqeb) I’m glad you’re happy with your 686e, and yes they do kick more than any other gun I have used, apart from a single Baikal. I have owned many guns over the years but never a Berretta; I have a browning auto gold, razzini multi, Hatsan auto and two Baikals, I have always liked the look of the 686 but after buying this gun I am not impressed at all, and am seriously considering getting ride of it, in two months I suppose I have put 200 cartridges through it but just can’t get to grips with it and end up putting away and using one of my other trusted guns.

Sorry to hear of your problems, I've always shot Beretta and have found then to be well made and reliable. Any new gun will take a good while to get used to so persevere. I also live in West Sussex and would be interested to know which dealer you have been going to- they sound like complete dipsticks and to be avoided.

Hi Shot & Missed thanks for your thoughts, regarding the gun as you say very well made, my problem is the amount of pull on the trigger, as I have said previously I have owed a fair few guns over the years and still own a few, but I have never used any gun that needs so much pull on the trigger, I took the gun back after the first outing and spoke to the gun shop, he told me oh well it’s a new gun, I said well I’m sorry but this gun is not right, and took it back to the shop I also took in my regular gun to compare triggers, the seller brought out a trigger pull tester and tried it on my old gun, number one trigger was just over 3 pounds number two trigger was 3 ½ pounds, he then started to put his tester away I said are you going to test my new gun, Oh no well this tester only goes up to 4 pounds, but leave the gun here and I’ll ease the trigger. I packed the gun back in its case last night and am returning it today. I have pm you the name of the shop.

Hi mate, would it not be worth your while contacting GMK direct, telling them of the problems you are having, i have the 686e also,i did encounter the trigger jamming on one occaision which a gentle tap on the stock seemed to rectify, have put about 400 carts throu it since with no problem, but i am now thinking perhaps mine is lacking some grease.

I have to ask why you found yourself in the position of having to grease the trigger mech on a new gun. From what you said, personally, I would have took photo's of the mech etc and then complained to both the dealer that sold it to you and beretta (you never know what you might get in return from the latter). Either way there is no way you (as the customer) should have to start working on a brand new gun. Beretta's are class and I'm sure the manufacturer would have something to say if they knew a dealer was pedeling their wares in a 'not new' condition. As for the recoil pad - I find the beretta one perfectly adequate (but horses for courses) one thing I would say is think carefully before you start modifying a new recoil pad to fit your gun (obviously this is a necessity - the modifying to fit I mean) but if you change the gun from 'Factory Standard' you may struggle to return it should you uncover any other undesirable issues at a later date.

In short mate, I would return the gun and ask for a full refund - No 'new' gun should be in the condition you state especially not a Beretta.... Good luck

I am with newsportshooter - upon finding the trigger mechanism in the condition it was, I would have taken it straight back and asked for a new one. I would ask for the new one to be stripped and inspected in my company by the dealer and would also inform the dealer that the gun will be coming straight back if it does not perform to your expectations.

Thank you for your support and comments chaps, on reflection when I removed the stock and found surface rust maybe I should have taken the gun straight back to the shop, but being a forma motor mechanic my thinking was oh with a bit of grease all should be well, I have to say I was pretty angry at the time because I had taken the gun back and complained the trigger was to tight, and after leaving it with the shop for 3 days was then told the triggers had been eased, well obviously they had not as the mechanism was dry and rusty.

Mate,

I think the dealer has 'mugged you off' to quote a London term... Anyway whats done is done with regard to the mech, lets hope the rust was merely surface rust as you suggest and nothing more sinister (after all who knows what damage moisture has done to the firing pins or springs etc).. I would still try and contact Beretta re the service you've had and at least give them the heads up re the rust problem (unless you really, really get on with your gun dealer in which case live with it). You may get a better response from the manufacturer than you expect... Good luck
