grasshopper
Went out on Saturday night as the fella that got me the new permission said that a lot of fox activity was evident after we shot the dog there last Sat. Parked in 1 of the fields, got my gear together and set off.1st field and i see a dark shape right at the bottom,Fox-pro on and in she comes.Stopped her at about 65yds and down she goes..only been here 10mins and 5 of that was getting my gear together wish it was like this all the time( and no,i wouldn,t get bored ) She was the same Vixen i saw in this field a few weeks ago, couldn,t get onto her then.Very stocky and bushy with short legs and in really good condition. Although i hung around for a few hours and called some more(heard 1 calling down the valley)nothing more was seen,so i headed to the shoot to try for the 1 that was coming to the Vixen call last week. Got set up and started calling.1st a car came along the road at the bottom of this field, then a motorbike with no lights on..then some poachers. There were 2 hares and 2 rabbits in the field(seen through the NV earlier)the jeep pulled up and a dog was sent through the fence....this is when i shouted.. "i wouldn,t do that if i were you" Lamp off and a lot of frantic whistling later they had the dog and were off I phoned 1 of the farmers at the other side of the shoot who kept an eye out(joined him for an hour too)but they never showed over there...no wonder i need Nv to get onto anything here Same farmer had some chickens taken the other night by a fox.He hadn,t closed the let on this shed for about a year with no probs Carcasses were left where they were and a couple tied to a nearby tree.We all spent over 3 hours watching and in my case checking most of the nearby fields but to no avail.Farmer went back out from 12pm untill 1-40am and we were back this morning just before 7 but the culprit never returned Tonight i decided to try for the elusive fox that i seemed to be getting interupted with I,d baited the muck heap at the bottm of this field on Friday after the shoot with 5 Squirrels,so i went to check and took 2 rabbits with me. All of the squirrels were gone and the field was freezing up somewhat(it,s been sodden for months)so decided to see if the Jimny would tackle it..no probs, straight in. I set the Fox-pro up with the rabbits staked out below it,parked up about 130yds away and set up the window rest Bazooka Joe made for it. Still in the development stage, but works great. Started calling with various Fox calls but nothing, which was strange,as last week he came belting into 1 of these Decided on a rabbit distress! I was able to check all around me with the large windows in the little jeep, and typically after turning back around from looking behind, there was a fox at the caller, not 3ft from it. I quickly attached the NV and loaded the rifle..nothing,no sign of him. :( 2 minutes later though and he re-appears some 25yds away :yp: He,s trying to walk away but can,t resist the call or the free rabbits and keeps turning to go back,as i line up on him and switch on the IR laser he,s looking straight at me about 140yds away. I just put my finger to the trigger and he starts to walk towards the call again,he stops side on and i line up behind the front leg and gently squeeze this is the 4th attempt at getting this fella,so say i was happy wouldn,t be enough This is him and the caller/rabbit set-up. Here,s another mod for the Jimny.Seats were too narrow for the rifles,so i made a gun rack that sits on the wheel arches with the seats either up or down. And as you can see on the second pic with the rifle in it,the window rack slides in perfectly too. The gun rack lifts out too when not needed. Cheers for reading and Happy New Year to you all Edited December 30, 2008 by grasshopper

grasshopper
Nice Fox-Nice set-up,Nice everything,Well Done! What rifle was you using mate? CZ 550 Lux in .22 250 with a Pes mod on Lewis - 1st fox was a Vixen, and she was in really good condition with a good coat on her. Incidentally, she was left hanging on the other side of a gate for 1 of the local farmers who regularly takes the mick, saying we can,t hit anything..worked a treat as he put his hand over to open it and felt something furry
Blackbart
Nice going.I love them callers but just cant justify the price.I like the gun rack and keep promising myself to make something for the shogun. Is there anything commercial to fit the seats, gun holder type thingy(excuse the technical terms)Called one a few weeks ago,he came a long long way, quick flash,he was 200 yards and heading straight towards us,my mate got the gun ready, quick flash again and he was gone .....he was gone because he was sniffing the front bumper wondering why a jeep was making a noise like a dying chicken Then my mate proceeded to miss him from 10 yards, 70 yards,160 yards And i promise i will let him forget it .........one day. Welsh Stinger
Hi guys I have never lamped fox before but I picked up a "Fox call UK " rabbit distress call at the Three Counties show at Malvern back in September and since then I have been going out in the evenings with the NV calling in fox . I don't take a gun , I am happy enough seeing how close I can get them in to me. I did manage to get one into six foot and another about twelve foot but on the whole they tend to stay at around 20-30 yards . I have shot fox before but only if I happen upon them while game shooting . I don't do much shooting these days but I do hunt , I hunt with a bow and it is one hell of a challenge . Bow hunting in the UK was banned in the 60's so I can only shoot targets here , I go bow hunting when I visit my son who lives in Arizona with his native American wife. The difference between a Bow hunter and an archer is an archer likes to see how far away he can hit a target where as a Bow hunter tries to get as close as he can to his quarry before letting go. I shall be reading your fox threads with interest hopping they will help me call in those coyotes when I next go States side.

grasshopper
Well done Jeff looks like your starting to get a few now Have you seen many pairs about yet up there ? the motor looks good even without the scissors Not seen any pairs Rob,although 1 off the lads of the shoot had 2 coupled together in his back field last week..unfortunately this is on the next shoot over! Then my mate proceeded to miss him from 10 yards, 70 yards,160 yards And i promise i will let him forget it .........one day. Well at least your mate is quick at reloading Not seen anything to buy gun-holder wise, only the racks that go on your back window..Target sports of Bolton do some of these! The fox pro is one of the best pieces of kit ive got. Tim,when they work they are a really good bit of kit..had mine working at about 130yds away last night.Raising it on the hook definately helps.Just to be able to switch calls in an instant is handy, but like all calls for fox, they don,t work all of the time WS - it,s not all about killing every fox i see..unless it,s on the shoot!! I was actually feeding 1 at work last year on nightshift,i used to take an extra sandwich in for it The red Fox is a beautiful animal,1 which i like and admire. Unfortunately they are a very efficient and ruthless killer,so around the Pheasant shoot and on the sheep farms, they are shot on sight!! I like the way you don,t kill them just for the sake of it,but would if needs be

weejohn
it will eventually pay for itself, you should start using it for shooting bunnies then sell them to help pay it off, would you reccomend it as i was thinking of investing in one.
