Lloyd90
Now if some land is cleared for say a 223 or a 270, does that mean it is already cleared for smaller calibres ? So say I have permission cleared for a 22LR, is it cleared to use a 17 HMR ? Thanks for some advice
Highlander
It sually means it's cleared for anything 'up to' that calibre but if in doubt ring your local FAO who'll tell you...it's all on computer nowadays. Sometimes there might be restrictions say for high seat use only etc.
Dave-G
It's the caliber/shell type not the FPS so the 17HMR should be covered. I'.ve heard that some forces ignore the guidelines and insist the 17 has to be cleared too, but I'm guessing these are mistaking the cartridge type. Though the guidelines don't list the HMR - nor some of the other recent calibres. look at the end of chapter 13: Home Office Guidelies Best to just ask to be sure the first time you assume it's legal and shoot with one. Lloyd90
Ok thanks guys I also thought that due to the 17 being a lower calibre than the 22 it should be cleared. My force is good on the HMR and has already given me it on condition to shoot fox and long range vermin :o I'll give them a call tomorrow to check thanks guys. Dave-G
That shows they are very tolerant and willing to budge from the guidelines BT - as Leicester will not condition rimfire for fox.
cubix
Yes, it's up to and including xyz. Daft really, e.g. clearing a land for a win 243 would allow you to use a 240 win magnum, which is a much more powerful and destructive round. tinytim38
Hey Thug, be careful shooting fox with the 17 HMR dont attempt anything over about 70 yds it has not got the energy do do the job humanely after that distance , trust me on that, if you need more distance go for a centrefire :o
codling99
ive had land cleared for .22 ,and when i asked if i could have it checked for.222 they said it was cleared up to .223,so should be covered, but as allways ring and check. as for .17 for fox,i wouldnt unless really close, same as .22,i have with .22 close, but also have hit foxes with .222 at around 150 yds and theyve run on,dont allways drop where they stand. Going next week to an RAF conference and will then be cracking on with my application so hopefully in a couple of months I will be handling an SA80 Doing my basic training
