.303 calibre

There are many rifles out there in .303 calibre . A friend of mine has a customised S.M.L.E. and it is a very good stalking cartridge . The .303 has been very popular in canada for many many years and has had a certain amount of succes in the states .

The .303 has been overlooked as a stalking calibre ,proberbly because of the age of the cartridge .It has been overshadowed by all the more modern cartridges over the last 50 years .

I am sure if you try you will find a maker who chambers for the .303 british ,after all the .303 has killed more big game in africa (and wounded more ) than any other cartridge . Good luck in your quest . Harnser .

Yes but its a catch 22 because if nobody is using .303 for game you won't get the ammo very easily The only people shooting .303 in quantity are the historical rifle buffs and they use FMJ.

The only people I know who keep .303 soft point are Wilson & Wilson in Ramsgate or Kynoco in Mildenhall. Thats OK if you are happy to drive miles every time you want ammo or you are prepared to pay a fortune and wait ages while your local dealer gets it for you on special order.

"Surely it would be possible to reload in .303?"

Of course it is, look about half way down the link page.

303's wont be for everyone, but if it's what you want, you have the money to buy what you want then why not?

.303 bullets are the same as 7.62x39 bullets ie .311

Do a search for soft pointed 7.62x39 bullets and there are many more options.

On the continent, 7.62x39 is a very popular hunting round and so they tend to have the best choice.

I bring my own bullets back from Bulgaria after shooting trips over there. The bonus is, or was until the pound collapsed, they work out very inexpensive

I have never used one, but would imagine a .303 would be a cracking deer rifle.

Myself and a few mates shoot 303 in our WW1 Short magazine lee enfields (smle) & WW2 Lee enfield No4`s at Bisley,

Great fun at 600yds - 1000yds with open sites, and hit targets,

Some are reloads and other are Samson,Privi etc about £40 - £60 per 100 rounds,
